2022 Seattle Mariners

Not sure what happened to the old thread so I'm making a new one. After losing out on the playoffs by one game last year, and not having made the playoffs in the last 20 years, we have high hopes but probably realistic expectations.

The Mariners had the highest pathagorean W-L vs. actual last year which means they probably overperformed more than any team last year. However, we have a lot of good young players, notably Julio Rodriguez and Jared Kelenic. It's hard to bet on 21 year olds having breakout seasons but if they can live up to expectations we might have a shot at making the playoffs with the expanded playoffs this year. One would think adding last years Cy Young winner Robbie Ray only increases our chances.

Maybe I am being overly hopeful, but my prediction is the Mariners finish at 89-63 and squeak into the playoffs.

I'm especially excited about Julio Rodriguez and think that the pundits are probably underrating Kelenic's chances this season based on that awful, awful first half he had. 2021 was such a weird year in so many ways. Maybe this is pro-Mariner optimism but I'd start with his September rather than the whole year... dude BABIPed .109 in the first half, haha. But Kelenic being a league-average starter alone would be worth about 4 WAR compared to last year...

Overall though for a team that obviously overachieved last year I don't see people discounting them *too* hard, like they seem to be pegged in at around 85 wins instead of, like, 75, which is about where you'd put them if they were to do exactly what they did last year by Pythag. I feel like I'd be pretty happy with 85 wins TBH.

It'll probably come down to our bullpen and how good Kelenic and Rodriguez are. We got a lot of those Pythag wins from our bullpen and I think if our bullpen is good again we have a good chance at 85-90 wins or even more. I think there are wins to be had in our division against Texas, Anaheim, and Oakland. Also the Mariners are willing to spend and I assume we will be adding some bats and maybe an arm at the trade deadline.

Sounds like the Mariners and JP Crawford reached a 5 yr, $50M contract extention. Definately a good move as he is a premier defender in the league.

Chris Flexin on the hill tonight in the 4th game of the series against the Twins. Can the Mariners win their first road series of the season?

Let's hope so. Would bring a lot of smiles to faces in these parts.

The Mariners are off to a slow start at 2-4, and are hitting 28th in the league after one week into the season at .191. It's obvious what needs to improve. It is early in the season, we have a lot of young players, and we have been playing in some cold weather cities in Minneapolis and Chicago on the road. That's not an excuse, but hopefully things turn around.

So I caught a little of the Mariners/Rangers game last night...

The M's broke out early and were leading 5-0 in the 2nd inning. Have to say, I was feeling pretty good at that point. Full forward to the seventh with two-on and two-out, and here comes a pitch (in the images below) called strike three.

The announcers are all nonchalant like: "Oh, it caught the corner," and I'm thinking: "What did I just see?"

Now I'm not trying to say the M's lost due to a bad call. If their fielding had been good in the middle innings the call in the 7th wouldn't have mattered. But it wasn't and it did.

Kelenic I love him... but he does the same thing as all our other prospects over the past 10 years... swings at low breaking pitches. Why would you do that?

Welcome to watching the Mariners, nobody in MLB wants a team from this remote place in the wet and cold boonies. Only somebody as amazing as Ken Griffey Jr can get us some respect from the league and the umps.

The Mariners are looking pretty solid at this point early in the season. With the expanded playoffs I think our chances of making the playoffs look pretty solid as long as we can avoid major injuries. We have a fun, agressive, style of play that should keep the fan base semi engaged.

I think it has to do with the way players are being coached in general, to focus on power and not to care so much about contact or lack therof.

Edit: Don't look now, but the Mariners have the second highest run differential in the AL.

So it's a 7-7 tie in the bottom of the 8th.

Brentz walks the first three Mariner batters.

Bases are loaded, and Brentz walks home the winning run!

We like the Royals.

Can they play in Seattle all the time?

I wasn't familiar with Kelenic, so I looked him up.

He had a great year in AAA last year..but in 430 MLB PA's, he's hitting a buck seventy nine.

There was a couple really close calls in last night's game. Somewhat ironically, both of them involved dives. (KC diving into second and the M's diving into first). Lots of boos in the stands over both calls, but close as they were, I gotta say, I think the umps got 'em right.

There's that and then came the amazing *Breaking Ball* in the top of the 12th...

It was the perfect pitch at the perfect moment. Pure poetry in motion!

A strike three toss that slammed the door on the Royals rally and set the stage for the Seattle win! Now I ask you, what could be sweeter than that?
