Base Running Stat

On the INTO>TEAM STATS page, at the bottom of the middle column lies a completely unexplained statistic called "BASE RUNNING"

What is it based on? What is the math formula for this rating? There is nothing but dead ends in the online manual.

Why is it there if its meaning is cloaked in obscurity?

I believe this is the stat they added:

https://library.fangraphs.com/offense/bsr/

This and a couple of other statistics - Arm Runs (for outfielders) and Framing Runs (for catchers) are brand new to 23 and they tend to lag behind when it comes to documenting this.

This (the Base Running) stat isn't new to 23. It is in 22 as well. Perhaps even goes back before that.

It did start in OOTP22. I could not find it in 19, 20 or 21, the games I still have installed on this computer.

The biggest issue for me is that it is a stat without a use or solution. That is because (as the useful link describes) the team stat is a compilation of all the players on your team. And this stat does not exist on the player stat pages anywhere.

So until we see this at the player level, it will be useless.

I was wondering this as well. I'm thinking it has to do, at least partially, with how often you're thrown out stealing or otherwise being aggressive on the basepaths.

I'm in first, with 100 wins and double any other team in steals, but last in "baserunning."

I'm aggressive.

Team baserunning rank is a reference to the UBR stat, which is a stat that can be read like wRAA -- except it refers to the player's performance in baserunning (i.e. taking extra bases on defensive miscues, and not running into unnecessary outs). It does not take into account wSB, which is a different stat for base stealing.

UBR has been in the game at least as far back as OOTP21, if not before that.

BsR is simply the sum of wSB and UBR, by the way

That is why we need it on the player level. Team total is useless. Other than being tossed out stealing, the rest is a mystery. I've seen plenty of teams with bad stealing and higher running stat. Also plenty with solid stolen base results and negative base running. So until we are shown who is doing poorly, there is no adjustments to be made.

Testing this out, in one experiment I simply set my strategy to not steal and I leapt to the top of list. Repeating the following season, I did poorly.

Why?

The stat is available on the player level, it's just also available for the whole team. You could say that team total for home runs or team batting average is useless too, but it's nice to know and be able to compare whole lineups.

I read the Fangraphs link that Syd provided. It’s a reliable and useful stat to have - on an individual player level, yes. It captures the subtle differences between speed home to first (beating out hits), basestealing (and getting caught or picked off), and advancing the “extra” base on hits and sac flies. Those skills are related, but some guys are better at some aspects than others.

One other thing that I wish a stat could capture is runners breaking up double plays, so the batter is safe at first. We could call it the Utley Factor. The OOTP narrative mentions it, often to explain how a slow batter avoided getting doubled up. But it would be a weird stat (except as a team stat) since the runner giving himself up has the “talent” but the batter is the beneficiary. The guys following Chase Utley in the order clearly had fewer GIDP thanks to him. We can see it, measure it, but I don’t know how to apply that to a given player.

Available, where? I'm still looking for it, which is the point of this thread.

So this is another one of those "lap top with screen set to 125%" issues again. I set my screen to 100% and there it was on the far right. However, not really large enough to read easily.

As much as I admire the developers, they are making it very difficult for those over 70 to use the game.

You can create your own custom views with whatever stats you want on them.

Uh-oh. This is a serious concern. Reaching that milestone in September. Already tweaking views to 115% LOL. Perhaps ask for a state-of-the-art monitor for my birthday??

Good point. I'll have to do this much like I created my own 'draft board' content.
