Why is set up so difficult?

Here's what I want to do:
  • Create a mid-sized league... figure 18 teams. 6 East, 6 Central, 6 West.
  • Make EVERY player from 1901 thru 1980 as available. If that means every Babe Ruth, every Ty Cobb, and every Ed Kranepool, so be it. (If that's impossible, I'd even go as far as accepting ONE great season from every player in that time frame... but I'd strongly prefer NOT a random one.)
  • Set it up where I am the GM for one team, and the computer is GM for all other teams.
  • Draft players and start the season. I've started a 1978 League, so getting thru to "game time" isn't the challenge. Its getting the right data set of players that's the issue.

Do I get there with New Historical Game or New Custom Game? I mean seriously, I've tried a number of options within each NHG and NCG and neither seem to get me where I want to be. In the worst case, if I had to settle with choosing to manage ONE historical team against 17 other teams, as long as I could choose those historical 18 teams in total, I'd be happy. It just seems like none of the above are possible. I've tried multiple times to set this up and while I get Mel Ott, Johnny Bench, Walter Johnson, I've never seen Ruth, Gehrig, Cobb and with Ott, Bench, Johnson, rarely are they using the best (or even excellent) statistical years. Its getting a little annoying creating 3+ hours of setups and not getting anywhere.

If anyone can give me a string to follow, I'd be indebted. Believe me, I've been playing baseball board games since 1978... still have my Avalon Hill Major League Baseball games in the basement... and I thought this would be the cure for no MLB... but this set up is ridiculous.

Try Baseball Greats in the Steam Workshop. That may be similar to what you want.

- Unzip it.
- Place the "Baseball Greats v3.quick" folder in your OOTP "quickstart_games" folder. You'll find this folder in your OOTP "data" folder.
- From the OOTP start screen, choose "New Quickstart Game."
- Choose "Baseball Greats v3."

If you have the patience to do so, you can also import players into your free agent list one at a time.

You can look up the player IDs on baseball-reference.com (the ID is in the search path) and copy the ID and choose which year you want to import that player from (e.g., Babe Ruth from 1927).
