Solo Fictional League ?'s

Ok, playing with the real players is starting to get boring to me, so I thought I would do a fictional draft with all settings set to 'average' or basically everything on an 'even keel' to begin my new baseball world.

Anyone else do something like this? Is it better to sim say 10 years and have some history develop or does starting anew make it more exciting as you see new records getting established and broken?

I'm going to use the same team names, but everything else is new from the ground up. Any things I should remember besides setting the game to 'career' before the initial draft?

Also, can you start manager mode AFTER the inital draft?

I just started a league that begins in 1901 with teams exactly as they were at that time, but using fictional players. By the time I get to 2003, the teams will be as they are now. Exactly how expansion and movement occurs will not mirror reality because of the way I'm playing.

See, I'm starting out in manage mode. I plan to have a kid who becomes a player (I will "adopt" by renaming if I can't produce one of my own). When he retires, I will retire from my manager career and take over as the son. I'll keep repeating this cycle.

I will only make league structure changes between when retiring and starting a new career. The reason is that there are certain things, like teams' home fields, that you can't change in manage mode.

For a hundred year sim make sure you have plenty of hard drive space. After 40 years my league was using almost 1 Gig. It's almost entirely due to the almanac which can either be turned off or, as one user suggested, burned to a cd ever decade or so.

Probably not a problem for your newer computers but it's taxing my little 4 Gig hard drive.

Well it kinda depends on what kind of set-up you are using. I started a 16 team fictional league set up in 1900 and after 30 years the size of the league is only a little over 200 megs (would probably be alot larger it I was also including player reports in the almanac and 40 megs of this is player photos.)

I had planned on adding 100 years of history before I took over but having to constantly come to my computer every 5 minutes to tell the game "No, to import real players" got somewhat annoying. So I think I may scrap the whole 1900 idea and instead start a league in 2003 or so but use the same "cycle of eras" but that way I can just sim the whole 100 year history one day while I am doing something else since I won't have to answer the import question at the end of each season (at least I think the game automatically starts genearting new players after the 2002 season.)

I have a 32 team fictional league with all the real teams and logos, but with fictional players.

I am currently in my 3rd season. I usually sim the season a week sometimes a month at a time and if my team the Reds make the playoffs, I actually play out my team in the postseason.

I am having a blast with it!!

I've started a league in 1901 using real players but with a twist. I only have 8 teams, 4 in each league. I've put teams in major league cities like Baltimore, New York, Seattle, Cleveland. But I've also thrown teams in Norfolk, San Antonio and Washington. Starting in 2010 and every ten years or so I'm going to expand by 4 cities and starting in 2015 and every ten years I'll check and see if any teams are candidates for relocation. I've given the teams new names and logos and stadiums. I've only gone through the first year but it's been fun so far. By the way the San Antonio Flyers beat the Baltimore Clippers 4-1 in the 1901 World Series.

I started a 12 team fictional league in 1920. I’m planning on letting it run for 10 years at which time I’ll expand to 16 (and change the structure so that there are divisions). At that point, I’ll take over one of the expansion teams.

It’s all planned out and laid out, now all I need is Cato’s updated utility and I’m in business!

Mekekim, when you drop down to only 8 teams, do you notice speed increases in sim time or any other improvements like that?

I've done a few fictional leagues till I finally had everything set the way I wanted. One thing that was consistent though was that the beginning years, seeing stars take shape, was what really drew me into the league. After that, it's like watching Mark McGwire go after Babe Ruth and Roger Maris. It's exciting, but I'm sure not as much as it must have been to watch Ruth.

Advice:

-backup right after you create the league
-backup right after you've set all the settings and are ready to begin (signing coaches or whatever the 1st thing is)
-backup after every season, right before you "proceed to next year"

You might not care about the backups now, but you might later when it is too late.

Kemp, what league settings are you using? Are your stats appropriate to the era? Are you using financials? Coaches & scouts?

I plan on doing something similar, although with divisions aligned on geographical quadrants, and really hope to evade the oft-reported problem of modern-era results from fictional players set in earlier times.

Thanks, R

Two recommendations regarding the record books:

1.) Make sure you clear the record books prior to starting your first season, if you haven't opted to use a blank record book initially. Retroactively fixing your record books is do-able, but is a *major* pain.

2.) For accurate rookie records, sometime between the beginning of the SECOND season and the end of the second season (preferably close to the beginning), get in the record book and clear out all the 'rookie' records. Otherwise, if a 5-star player who was 35 years old during your first fictional season hits 60 home runs, the game will consider this to be the 'rookie' record (since all players are rookies at the beginning of the first season) and future rookies will have a helluva time beating the mark.

Hope this helps!

My 100 year sim with the almanac on with player pages but no box scores came in at a little over 2.3 GB....I bought a inexpensive 20 GB HD and OOTP sets in there by itself....just so I know I'll have room for awhile...

The "recalculate for historical accuracy" button works pretty well, but at some point in the first decade, it gets really off. I think it has to do with the numbers being just TOO different from modern settings. Anyway, if you hit it in 1901 and then not again until 1921, it should work pretty well.

Well...I like games...period..always had, when I was 9,18, and now as I approach 30...OOTP is my favorite game...so you have to do whatcha got to do...

Seriously...I have been known to go out and by a particular graphics card for a particular game...no other reason....just for that game...

I think I paid 59.99 for the 20 GB...just a 5400 RPM but it is much less of a head ache...with all the add ons and the folders that OOTP and its utilities and face and logo and stadium and skins packs....AHHHHH.......

Eh hem...like I was saying I really like the game...its pretty good...
