Add Spot Starter
Previous versions had the ability to have a 5th or 6th starter assigned in the rotation to have a percentage of starts. I would like to see this option returned. For example a 5th starter could be assigned to start 10 percent of the scheduled games. So he would get 16 starts for a current 162 game schedule.

You can kind of accomplish this right now by setting a 5-man roto and using "always start highest rested."
I know it's not what you're asking for, but it's better than nothing for the time being. |

This would be very useful right now it requires too much intervention if you wanted to do it across teams (e.g. simulation)

I don't understand the usefulness of spot starters in the game. As I understand it, you'd just be forcing a reliever to start once in while even while the regular starter is rested and ready. And for the reliever to be effective as a starter, he would have to avoid pitching for many days before his scheduled start in order to be fully rested, just like a starter has to do. So what is the point of it? If you are doing it to try to give a player experience as a starter to help development, I'm pretty sure the game doesn't care whether innings are pitched as a starter or reliever. It's all the same to the game for player development.
In real life, I believe a spot starter is just supposed to be someone that starts under special circumstances, like in a double-header, or someone that gets called up just to start one game and go back down. So having a set percentage to start seems to be arbitrary thing that was in the game, with no real life basis. Also, I'm not sure if the AI was smart enough make sure the spot starter wasn't used in relief when his schedule start was coming up when it was a feature in old versions, since I never used it. I would think there might be problems if the bullpen is tired and is forced to resort to using the spot starter in games before his start, especially since they'd be trying to operate with 1 less reliever than normal. |
