Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak

Anyone ever broken this in one of their games?

Currently have Nolan Arenado on 36 in my game, the nearest I have ever seen to 56.

I've been playing OOTP for years and never seen anyone come close.

Just shows what an accomplishment Joe D's streak really was...

My second baseman once went on a 44 game streak, back when I played out every pitch of every game in version 12 or 13, maybe. Still the longest I've seen in one of my games -- and still the most memorable season I've had because of it.

The best I've ever had from one of my players is 39 games, tying Paul Molitor. But I did last month an AI player reached 60 games in the 1947 season of a fictional league (bottom-left corner of the Streaks screenshot).

The streak is a magnificent record that will stand the test of time. Especially in today's environment with OBP being more valued than BA. Here's a great paper published by Harvard on the subject http://isites.harvard.edu/fs/docs/ic...o%20Streak.pdf

What's really interesting is that DiMaggio had a 61-game hitting streak in 1933 while playing for the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League. He was only 18 years old.

The minor league record, incidentally, is 69 games, set by Joe Wilhoit in 1919.

2 other interesting facts about the streak:

-the streak ended with Indians third baseman Ken Keltner making two terrific back handed stops to rob DiMaggio of two hits.

-Dimaggio would, after going hitless that one game, immediately go on another hit streak of 16 games, which means that if Keltner hadn't made those 2 great defensive plays then Dimaggio's MLB streak would have been an even more amazing 73 games!

There are even more interesting facts about the streak. EDIT: My favourite of those being:
Quote:
12. The streak almost ended at 35. On June 24 against St. Louis, DiMaggio was hitless when he batted in the seventh inning, and Browns manager Luke Sewell ordered Bob Muncrief to "walk him!" Muncrief refused, Sewell relented and DiMaggio singled.

No one has came close in my OOTP replays. I always thought Ichiro would have been the one to break DiMaggio's record in real-life and OOTP. I think of it as similar to someone hitting .400 in the modern era.

That's a good point and I'm one of those people who value OBP more than BA, but I also very much appreciate Ted Williams' 84 game on-base streak. It should maybe be even more impressive. I get that getting a hit is probably more a function of something the hitter did than a walk is, but getting a walk still takes something by a hitter. All it takes is one manager deciding to walk a hitter most or even all of his plate appearances (see Maddon-Harper) to end the streak and the only reason you'd do that is because you're afraid the hitter will do even more damage otherwise.

Probably the reason why Williams' streak is not more talked about is OBP appreciation is still relatively new. One day, far from now if ever I'm sure, maybe it'll be Williams' streak that gets all the attention instead.

FWIW, Joe DiMaggio's on-base streak was 74. He walked in the game before the streak started and he walked in the game it ended. And as impressive as that is, Ted Williams' streak was still 10 games more!

From 2002-2004 Barry Bonds did not reach base in only 23 games.

in my ABF league, which is sim only for now. Ty Cobb had a 76 game streak back around 1921. In my EBL vs MLB, the league record for each of the 3 ML's is 35 games.

An At-Bat has to be recorded for a hitting streak to end, so if a batter had 5 Plate Appearances and he was walked in all of them the streak continues.

You've only got 4 or 5 plate apperances in every game. If you lose some of that to walks, either full-on intentional or the pitching around kind of semi-intentional, you're suddenly down to 1 or 2 at-bats for you to continue your hitting streak. No one can sustain a hitting streak if a opposing manager decides that walking the hot batter is a lesser risk than letting him hit in most situations. If you bat a pretty hot .400 and an opposing manager decides to walk you often, leading to 2 at bats per game for a 3-game series, your chance of continuing your streak is only slightly better than 1/4 (26.2%)
