An interesting proposal to change All-Star voting

What do you guys think about this?

Yep, thumbs down if residents outside the US aren't allowed to vote.

I didn't see the Americans only part.

I do like the part about a preliminary vote to decide who goes on the final ballot and then the final vote to decide the starter. I'm not sure I like the one night of voting part though as I think a lot of people would just not vote then. I'd rather see the final vote go for at least one week. That also gives us more persepective with more sample size.

Thing is, I'm not sure that holding the vote in the middle of the season is best though. People seem to be divided on whether they vote based on how famous a player is or how well they're doing that season and neither seems all that wise of criteria. I mean, do we really want some washed up former great in this year's ASG? I don't. And likewise, do we really want somebody who had a great first part to this season, but could very well never be heard from again? I don't want that either. But of the two choices, basing it on fame makes a bit more sense to me. So maybe we should be holding the vote, for the starters, during the pre-season, which would then largely be based on fame or on their last few years' performance, and fill in the rest in the days before the game, which would presumably be based on how well they're playing that season.

Here are some other ideas.

I particularly like the idea of the players and managers pick the roster, the fans just get to select the starters. That way hopefully the managers and players are more responsible or at least certain fanbases won't get more votes just because there are more of them or there are more of them cheating.

I also like the idea of league leaders in certain stats automatically get on the team, but I don't think I'd want them to be automatic starters. Automatically on the team is good enough.

Well stated, however imo the All-Star game isn't supposed to be about fame. It's supposed to feature the best players that season. If it features the best all time who are still active, then why hold it every season?

I say base it on stats - I want to watch the guys who are hitting good now and pitching good now, I don't care if he's a flash in the pan or been hitting .325 with 40 dingers every season for the past 5. If he's playing well now, I want to see him perform against all the other guys who are playing well now.

No offense old popular famous guys, I still enjoy watching you during the regular season, but during the all-star game, I want to see the current all-stars. Current best against current best.

I also understand that it is, and will remain, a popularity contest. I don't waste my time voting anymore. MLB wants it to be a popularity contest, they want the fans to have the vote, to feel apart of the game.

It's about making $$$ more than anything, and popularity among the fans brings them out and gets them spending their hard earned $$$.

Nothing wrong with that, it's a business trying to make a profit.

Wait, no Canadian votes? Canada does still have an MLB team, not that MLB seems to notice. And what Caribbean countries where the fans may arguably be more knowledgeable about baseball than many American fans?
