Which Fictional Setting Would You Prefer?
If you were to join a new fictional league which format would you rather join?
1. Start completely from scratch with an initial draft. 2. Have the league have a simmed history, then simply choose a team to use when the league officially starts. |

I have been through both and for ease of start up, option #2 is the best and probably the most popular. For option 1, you need to have 100% of your GMs active and interested in building their teams from the start, otherwise things tend to drag on and on for the draft.
Personally, I really prefer option 2 because it builds a bit of history for members of the league to enjoy while increasing their interest in the league and their teams. There's nothing more interesting to me than seeing the history of a league grow without having to compare it to real world baseball history. |

A hybrid would be my preference. I'm not really into simming history first as I like the idea of participating fully in the early years, but I totally agree with RoryN that doing an initial draft is a major pain. So I'd say sim most or all of the initial draft (maybe only have people pick for the first few rounds), then pick it up from there.

Thanks for the responses guys. I commished a few leagues years ago before I had computer problems. I'm looking to commish a new one when 13 comes out. I'm just trying to get ideas on how to proceed.

Having been a part of, and having run both, I'm partial to a hybrid. Get your owners in on the ground floor. Sim the history, but allow input (via created players, team name changes, etc) by your owners. Then, when you take over, your owners have a sense of ownership with the league from the get-go. Not only does it make getting to know the history easier, but your owners are more likely to stick around because they've helped shape their franchise over the years.
In running the ABL, I had less turnover than any league I've ever been a part of. In 3 years of running the league, I had four ownership changes total. And a lot of the guys that were part of that league are signing up for my new project. It isn't anything I did as a commissioner, but that they know how involved they can be in the building of their franchise. So, I recommend that route. |

Thanks for the responses guys. I am going to get back into the commish business after a few years away from OOTP. I want to make sure I get it right the first time.
