I agree with Rudel that the team is unsustainable in Winnipeg. They will not attract free agents unless they over pay. The building is 3000-4000 short of more typical arenas. They will have a 5 year honeymoon with excited fans but unless they are a top third team the fan interest will drop soon after.

My post was half in jest.

I hope the team succeeds in Winnipeg but I am sad that Atlanta lost the team. I think hockey is sustainable in the American south. Nashville being a good example.

But maybe this franchise can become the NHLs version of a kid who's parents are divorced and have joint custody.
Winnipeg can have the team through the week and have to take it to school and Atlanta can be the cool dad who gets the team on the weekends and lets it drink soda and eat ice cream.

I think the saving grace for Nashville was ownership that weren't complete morons, and lack of competition (what else is there in Nashville? Titans?). Playoffs dont' hurt either.

And ya Atlanta's situation is starting to come across as less of a Florida/Phoenix situation, and having more and more parrelles with the MLB's Expos, where ownership incompetence pretty much nuked the team. Too bad indeed.

Well, I'm happy as can be that they're back. Are they sustainable there? Under the current CBA with its floor, probably not in the long run, but I have to think that they're going to do something about that come the next one which is, when, some time in the next few years?

I just hope they keep the name. Anything but the Winnipeg Jets just won't be right IMO.

Next CBA is after next season. That's part of the reason why they're holding off on realignment for now.

I don't have a problem that Winnipeg has a team again. As a matter of fact, I'm happy for them. I just ****ing hate that it's at the expense of another city.

And yes, they need to be the Jets.

What I don't get is they already had a team once. Why did they move? If they moved because they thought would be better off in Phoenix, why are they sending another team there?

Atlanta shouldn't have had this team anyway. The Flames left in 1980 because Atlanta sucked for hockey.

Simply, the Jets moved to Phoenix largely because the Canadian dollar deteriorated to the point where the team was no longer viable. The CAD was about 70 cents to the US Dollar and with salaries being paid in USD, you can see the revenue/expense problem that it caused.

Now, with the CAD/USD being basically at par, the smaller Canadian markets such as Winnipeg and Quebec City are viable again. I assume that's part of what Rudel was getting at - if/when the USD rises again, Winnipeg will be in trouble again.

Actually, there is a s*** load of things for people to do in Nashville. Titans are the obvious one but the AAA Nashville Sounds have a devoted fan base. There's also a lot of Division I college sports in the near area including Vanderbilt in Nashville proper. (Football sucks but basketball and baseball are big deals.)

The team has a great marketing machine that knows the right notes to strike in this town. The success of the team on the ice helps a lot but the team really plugs into the local community in ways a lot of teams take for granted. If it wasn't for their dedication to making this "Smashville" they could end up being a lot like the Thrashers.

I am real happy for Winnipeg to have a team again. It has not seemed right since they moved to Phoenix. I am saddened that there will no longer be a team in Atlanta. That is the best bet for me to see my Bruins play. Nashville is same distance but I have to deal with the one hour time difference. Anyways congrats to the jets hopefully they will be successful

Sounds pretty loud and rowdy down at Portage and Main tonight. A radio reporter just waded into a crowd playing a spontaneous street hockey game. Lots of alcohol seemed to be involved and apparently there was only one goalie. Poor guy. You have to be somewhat masochistic to allow a bunch of drunks to take shots at you, don't you?

This looks like a party that could last quite a while.

The Predators also do not have much in the way of star power. They have a group of good and very good players but no superstar.
If they were to ever get such a player that would only help the popularity.

Well, have to say the title of this thread is way off. The Winnipeg Jets are NOT coming home, they are staying in Phoenix.

I hope they come up with a new name, "Jets" is part of the history and glory of years gone by. This should be a new era, new name.

Having said that, I don't mind at all if they do use "Jets", I just think the new franchise should create its own identity.

Very happy to see a team in the Peg again though. Hopefully Quebec can get an arena built and eventually get a franchise again too.
