Catchers Plate Appearances ???
I am in the process of making the Best of for each Franchise. Now I am using 3.1 plate appearances per team game played and 1 inning pitched per team game played as qualifiers.
As I am doing the Arizona Diamondbacks, not one catcher from 1998-2008 had 502.2 plate appearances. The highest is 443 by Johnny Estrada in 2006. So my question is do they do any special qualifications for catchers since its a much harder position to play ??? In their 11 year history only 7 Catchers caught over 100 games, 123 was the highest (123,115,115,115,110,101,100). So for Catchers I might have to change the 3.1 Qualification to another number... |

Since the Hall of Fame doesn't have written qualifications for players, catchers are generally compared with other catchers rather than positional players. |

For the batting title all they do is give you an "0 for" for those PAs they're short.
For your purposes you may want to find out what the average PAs a starting fielder (top 8 by PA x # of teams), sans catchers, gets a season, then compare it to what the average starting catchers get. Divide the latter by the former and multiply that by the 3.1 to get what you want.

For the Colorado Rockies from 1993-2008 only 1 catcher has qualified with enough plate appearances which was 1995 Joe Girardi, 506 PA, only needed 446.4 to qualify. Girardi came close in 1994 with 361 PA, needing 362.7.
The 2nd highest PA was 443 by Torrealba in 2007. Of the 63 catchers that have played over those years, 36 players average 3.1+ plate appearances per games they played but not enough plate appearances per games the team has played. I am using 3.1 PA & 1 IP as qualifiers for what I am doing. Now I think these are only qualifications for Batting Averages and ERA titles ??? But I am trying to make all-time teams for each franchise and its hard picking catchers since alot dont qualify using the 3.1 PA method. For catchers I was think of using games, 108/162 is 67%... 8 of the 63 catchers then qualify and 6 of the 8 average 3.1+ PA. Iannetta in 2008 had 168 Total Bases (the most by a catcher for the Rockies) in 104 games, 407 PA, 2 more total bases then 1995 Girardi, but also doesnt qualify for the 108 games either. So I am asking what others might use to pick a catcher or not use to pick catchers that dont have enough PA. For the 1998-2008 Arizona Diamondbacks, 0 catchers have reached the 3.1 PA, the most PA is 443 and the most games123... Of the 37 catchers, 22 have 3.1 per games they played, 5 have played 108 games... Last edited by MightyQuinn; 07-19-2009 at 10:16 PM. |
