Your Hall of Fame Snub
We all have personal preferences of guys who should be in the HOF. Some players have the numbers and it bothers you that they haven't been honored. Otherwise if they don't deserve it, you might have a soft spot in your heart for them.
For example, for some time I have been hoping Bert Blyleven would get into the hall. I am sure there are plenty of Twins fans in the same boat as myself. But recently I have found another player that I wish was in before Bert. Buck O'Neil has now become the #1 snubbed person I wish would get into the hall. I am sure he will get in next time, but it is a joke that he was denied last year with a lot of other negro leaguers entering. I am sure he will get put in next time, but it is a shame he is no longer alive to enjoy it. So I ask: Who is your #1 snubbed person who you wish would be elected into the Hall of Fame?

Rich Gossage. Better than Sutter for a longer period of time. Arguable between he and Fingers as the best closer of the era (70's).
Blyleven is a close second. Way, way better than Don Sutton or Phil Niekro.

Ted Simmons and the Goose are my pet snubs, but Bert and Buck are close seconds.

Gotta go with Blyleven, as well.
Can we take peeps out? THAT list is much longer.

Buck by a large margin. I felt that way even before he died.

They treated Simba like he was a joke candidate, eliminating him in his first year from future ballots. Why? Probably because they believed their own writing about his "bad" defense and because he played DH late in his career. One of the best hitting catchers of all time and they cast him aside like he's Walt Weiss.

I'm 50-50 on Simmons. He's certainly better than more than just a handful of catchers already in. And he was a very good player. But he never struck me as a dominant player. I guess I suffer from Johnny Bench blindness in his peer group.
And along those lines, Bill Freehan is probably worth a second look. He also is much better than a lot of guys in the Hall. Wasn't quite the hitter Simmons was, but was regarded as an excellent defensive catcher (6 gold gloves).

I'm gonna do a pre-emptive strike for Edgar Martinez.

Is there a good era-adjusted analysis of him?

Alan Trammel, that MVP in 87 he was robbed of would have made the difference

Simmons was a longevity guy, with decent numbers. Norm Cash also deserves strong consideration...check out HIS numbers. Sure, he ONLY hit .271...sure, he only hit 377 homers...BUT, his OPS+ for his career was 139, which is pretty damned good. This is higher than Tony Perez, or Orlando Cepeda. Not that THEY belong to the HOF, but still. Last edited by dsvitak; 10-15-2006 at 05:09 PM. |
