De La Hoya vs. Forbes (HBO)

I say Forbes wins a SD.

That would be nice, but for Forbes to win he would have to either win every round, or knock him out.

I had it 11-0-1 for Oscar. I called one round even because I felt sorry for Forbes. Oscar will still lose to Mayweather though I'll root for him. I'm sick of the Mayweather elders acting like they invented boxing.

Props to Forbes for going the distance with the naturally bigger fighter. Read this week about how that Steve weighed only two pounds at birth, (hence the nickname), and overcame tremendous odds just to live, let alone become a world champion boxer. Have to respect a guy like that.

Will also be rooting for Oscar in the Mayweather fight. (Although I don't see it going much differently than their first encounter.) As I've stated before, don't see anyone south of 160 touching Floyd at this point.

Good fight from Oscar but I got tired of hearing the announcers talking like he can beat anyone if he stays outside like that. Yet they will say during the PBF fight that the only way to beat him is to pressure him. If Oscar stays outside against PBF, then Floyd will win even more then the 9 rounds he won last time (although it will still be a split decision with GBP judges).

I think Oscar gets knocked out late by Floyd this time. He made his adjustments versus Forbes who's not even close to Mayweather's class or style. And everyone is acting like Floyd isn't going to be making any adjustments at all. He's actually talking about Cotto for his farewell fight in December. I hope he doesn't make that.

Cotto KO's Oscar inside 6 rounds. I think he will lose to PBF pretty convincingly (scorecards or not) like last time and will take on a fight he knows he can win in order to "retire" with a win. But I also seriously doubt that he will be done for good this year.

The backstory is interesting but I'm not sure if I "respect" a guy who fights not to get knocked out rather than to actually try to win. Despite the ravings of the HBO guys I learned very little about ODLH from this fight. Maybe 150 is a better weight for him than 160 or 168 and maybe that will give him the edge he didn't have in the past but I sure couldn't tell against Teve Torbes.

Forbes, was a world class lightweight but is ordinary as a super welter/junior middle. His corner telling him to steal rounds by throwing lots of punches in the last ten seconds was nuts.....he doesn't have the resume to do that. The fighters HBO stated they choose from: Solita, Pauly Mag, and Forbes all have one thing in common, they can't punch. They wanted Oscar to appear relaxed and dominate to sell the next bout....which he will lose. I can't see him beating Mayweather or Cotto at this point. I would like to see an Oscar vs Cotto fight. That would set some PPV records.

^ Yeah, I agree. I saw Oscar get tagged early by Forbes & thought it's lucky he's not getting hit by a guy who can really bang. Even though Forbes isn't a big puncher, Oscar's face had some lumps afterwards. What would a puncher like Cotto do?

I'm a big Oscar fan because his fights (usually win or lose) have a lot of drama. Last night was one of the more boring Oscar fights I can recall.

I only though Forbes could win a split decision because DLH is known for fading late in fights. Oscar was dominant because he was able to relax against a B/C level opponent. Floyd will beat him more convincingly in the rematch and when "Money" starts building up a big lead, watch DLH revert to swinging for the fences instead of jabbing his way in. You can't teach an old dog new tricks.

The HBO crew was so far up Oscar's behind last night that would have took surgery to remove them. Eventually I got tired of their "man crush" and watched the rest of the fight on mute. Even then, it was pretty easy to score the fight.

At least I got one thing right..........Forbes survived the entire fight. Some people here were saying he would be TKO'ed early. Stevie might not have the skills to keep up with an elite fighter but no one can say his chin isn't world class.

I totally agree, as I watch most Oscar fights on mute because at times you would think he is the only one landing punches if you listen to Lampley.

It was about what I expected, Oscar controlled the fight and Forbes did little to win, other than try and land an occassional bomb, which does not suit his style or punching power. (He did tag Oscar clean a couple of times, which ODLH won't get away with against a banger with any hand speed at all)

And speaking of the Mayweather's, you would think that since they did invent boxing Floyd Sr would have told De La Hoya to keep his hads a little higher. At this stage of his career Oscar does not have the reflexes to fight like that.

Forbes is like PBF lite, same general style, just at a much lower level....It amazes me how Lampley and Merchant were on Oscar's jock as if he had now figured out how to fight PBF next time, WTF??? This was like using Forbes as a sparring partner before fighting PBF. It prepares you for the style, not the talent.

^ Yeah, were they trying to make the case for people to buy the HBO PPV fight in Sept.?

People watching might be talked into buying a fight they didn't they would but maybe HBO hopes Jim & Larry can talk people into believing Oscar has a good chance.

The only class guy in the Mayweather clan is Jeff. Floyd Sr. and Roger are grade A morons.

I agree. I have a video of Roger coaching boxing and he speaks, when you can understand him, like he invented the sport. All of his fighters have tremendous talent which makes him look good. He said in the tape that he only trains very talented fighters. I'm not saying that any of the mayweathers are poor coaches, but they think want praise and acclaim when all of that should go to the person swapping blows. I would agree that Jeff is the most likable among them.

All that said, I think Roger took a few too many from Chavez. You didn't see Chavez do anything special style wise in the ring. He just slipped punches and beat the hell out of you.

Wow this turned quickly into a "Let's hate on the Mayweather's" thread. How surprising.

I don't think anyone is hating on the Mayweathers at all. The point was that the Mayweather clan pat themselves on the back insessently and never give whatever fighter their training or fighting credit.

That's called criticism. No one said they weren't talented or did a bad job.
