Cross-gaming OOTP and other games
"Cross-gaming" isn't a real word, I don't think, but the idea is creating a universe in which more than one game, including OOTP, takes place. I got the idea for the topic from another thread here.
I'm wondering if anyone has done that sort of thing, and what games they've done it with. For instance, I have considered doing it with Civilization: you build a civilization, and then you set a league within that civilization once you get to, say, 1901. I'd also started working on a Sim City one, back when Sim City 4 came out. In both cases, it would have taken too long and I abandoned the idea. But it is something that has always intrigued me. Anyone else?

It's an interesting idea to be sure. You could really increase your enjoyment of the various games by tying everything together like that. It's certainly the kind of thing I'd dig. The difficulty would be finding like-minded individuals who'd be as passionate about the idea. Most people go for more traditional experiences and wouldn't be interested in a "weird" concept like this. A shame, but true.
The closest thing to this that I can think of is Solonor's Groovy Computer Baseball League, which combines OOTP and the Tolkien mythos. I think it's a fabulous idea and he's obviously found a number of owners who agree. So I'd say that gives some hope that people would bite for the kind of idea you're suggesting. |

Somehow, intermediate results in a game like Civ IV (war, obviously, but perhaps other things like yielding territory, vassalage status, obtaining a resource, technology, or trade advantage, etc.) could be linked to winning or losing in a league or tournament of civilizations set up in OOTPB. The problem, in this example at least, would be in forcing the results in a game like Civ IV. There's no "commissioner" in Civ IV, unfortunately, and the use of cheat codes, if any, could affect or invalidate other outcomes in the game. Last edited by 1998 Yankees; 02-23-2008 at 09:25 AM. |

I guess this counts, because, while not a video game, D&D is still a game, but I've set leagues up in a world I initially created as a campaign setting.

Cross-gaming
Are you referring to a universe where different sports are in action throughout the year, following the actual calendar? In essence, you might have an OOTP baseball season getting underway at the end of March, while your Draft Day Sports college hoops league was going into the Tournament, your EastSide Hockey league and DDS:PB leagues were approaching the playoffs, and your Front Office Football league was getting ready for the college draft?
I knew a guy who did that solo, and it made for a fascinating Dynasty report, especially since he was doing it in a historical period. Unfortunately I think he had to eventually give up due to severe mental health issues brought on by the project. I think it was the NASCAR and golf that finished him off.

Not really just different sports, necessarily, although that's interesting to do, too. I've seen people do that here. I mean having two games (or more!) in which you are basically building a universe and tying together the universe you create in one with the universe you create in the other.
For instance, you could have a guy in the Sims who is a baseball player (I don't know how well the Sims supports that sort of thing these days - I haven't played since around the time the first game came out) and play out his career in OOTP. Or you could build a region in Sim City and use the cities as cities in a league, with appropriate population sizes, and even change things like market size in OOTP to keep the two games in line.

I've created characters in other baseball games that were legends in universes created in OOTP or other games. Sometimes its fun to pay tribute to great fictional characters this way.

Yeah, I noticed you had SC4 screenshots (I think that's what they were) in your little league dynasty.

I've tried this in a host of different scenario to breathe life into OOTP for me by trying lots of unconventional things, but I might be burnt out..because nothing holds my interest like it used to. |

You could also create an avatar for your manager or star player in Second Life, or something like that. Then live out his life while he's not at the stadium in there. Make him a booze hound, get him a house, whatever.
Not that I have time for any of that but you could. |

Isn't there a little bit of Dean Houston in every game ever played.
I beat he dominates Second Life. |
