Albuquerque Regulators
Albuquerque Regulators
I have read a lot dynasty posts and always wanted to give it a try. So, I recently decided to give myself as much of a challenge as possible. I asked for some help and Sandman and captaincarl gave me some great ideas. Thanks guys! IF ANYONE ELSE HAS IDEAS FEEL FREE TO POST THEM IN THIS THREAD. I WANT TO MAKE THIS AS DIFFICULT AS POSSIBLE. The following is what I decided to set as the rules for my dynasty. Rules highlighted in red I have updated my rules to keep things as hard as possible. FREE AGENT SIGNINGS: (From Jan 1 to the following Jan 1) A) I can only resign 2 of my own FA's a year. B) Maximum FA’s I can sign is 3 (During 2011 season only) C) Following seasons, I can sign FA's as needed (To replace players lost in FA only). **However, I must make every attempt to replace them with players within the organization. ** D) Maximum yearly salary is 7 million per season for a player. TRADES: (From Jan 1 to the following Jan 1) I only react to trades....and, can only make 1 trade a year. WAIVER MOVES: (From Jan 1 to the following Jan 1) I can only make 1 waiver claim per year. FREE AGENT COMPENSATION IS TURNED OFF TEAM PAYROLL: A)Total team payroll must be in bottom five of league. B)Team payroll can not exceed 50 million at anytime. SCOUTS/COACHES: A) Scouts are still on. However, I am not going to use any scouts at any level. Going to use stats only to judge players. B) Coaches are set 1-5 (To keep me from signing a coach that's all 101's or something like that.) RANDOM RULES: A) I can not look at the Top 100 prospect report. B) No feeder leagues. C) During expansion draft each team protected 30 players. QUICK LEAGUE UPDATE: 2007/2008 I made no league changes. 2009 Oakland A’s moved to British Columbia, Vancouver becoming the B.C. Mounties Florida Marlins moved to Charlotte, North Carolina becoming the Carolina Red Wolves. 2010 I made no league changes. 2011 League expanded by 2 teams Albuquerque Regulators Nevada Rattlers

I don't really have any true timetables. I'm just gonna give it a run and see were it all ends. I would unofficially hope that in 5 or 6 years I would at least be a playoff contender. However, I highly doubt I will climb out of the bottom of my division for a while LOL.

Regulators Coaching Staff Completed
REGULATORS COACHING STAFF COMPLETED
Albuquerque Journal December 13, 2010 With the MLB expansion draft a little over a month away the Regulators announced their major league coaching staff today. General Manager, Scott Bays, flanked on each side by the four members of the Regulators coaching staff introduced each member. “I take great pride in announcing the group of men that will hopefully lead the team on the field for years to come,” Bays started. “It’s my job as a General Manager to ensure they get every good player possible.” Rumors have been persisting for days that Regulators would like to have a familiar name or two on its coaching staff. Consequently, it came as little to no surprise as Bays slowly listed off each members name. “I guess the first name I should mention is Donnie’s,” Bays slightly laughed and motioned to his left. “Don Mattingly, stand so they know who you are Don.” Gaining a quick laugh from many of the gathered press members in the room. “I truly believe this is a guy most baseball fans recognize quickly and early in the whole process to assemble a coaching staff we approached Donnie and asked him if he would be interested in serving with the Regulators in some capacity.” Bays continued. “Much to my surprise he was interested in leaving the Yankees were he has served as AAA manager for the last three years.” When Mattingly was asked why he would leave the only organization he had ever known. He sat quietly for a few seconds and thoughtfully answered. “I really felt I had done everything I needed to do to prove myself ready to manage at the major league level,” he continued, “Don’t take me wrong I hated leaving the Yankees. But, I felt it was my time to leave.” Bays then announced Fabio Cleaver, saying he would be Mattingly’s Bench Coach. The same position he served, with Mattingly, in Scranton-Wilkes (Yankees AAA affiliate). “Really, the only reason I left the Yankees is this guy to my left, Fabio” Mattingly joked and playfully punched him in the arm, “He was my Bench Coach in Scranton-Wilkes and I wanted to stay with him.” On the right hand side of Bays, former major league first baseman and Regulators Hitting Coach, Scott Hatteberg. “Scott Hatteberg is a guy that many people feel is going to manage someday too, if he so chooses.” paying another compliment Bays added, “I guess the best way to describe Scott during his playing days is to say he was ‘a professional hitter'.” The last member of Mattingly’s staff is Pitching Coach Albert Bidal. “Although Albert Bidal has never served a team at the major league level. He is a legend in minor league circles.” Bays finished by saying. “Albert has shown over the years he can communicate with players of all ages. What else can you ask for from a coach?”

A Glimpse Of Albuquerque’s Baseball Future Happened Yesterday
A GLIMPSE OF ALBUQUERQUE’S BASEBALL FUTURE HAPPENED YESTERDAY
Albuquerque Journal January 5, 2011 A philosophy almost as old as baseball states “Pitching and defense wins games”. Consequently, 22 of the Regulators 35 expansion draft picks yesterday were pitchers. While none of them have any Cy Young awards hanging on their walls. They definitely have talent that may lead to future glory. The remaining 13 draft picks were mostly young, talented and versatile position players. With 33 of the 35 draft picks being no older than 29 years old. They only two exceptions with the youth formula being Freddy Sanchez, 33 (2006 N.L. Batting champion) and Dan Uggla, 30 (3rd place finisher in the 2006 Rookie of the Year balloting). Prior to the draft Regulators GM, Scott Bays, stated he hoped to get as many major league ready players as possible. Using the age of 25 as a barometer, 21 of the 35 expansion picks are possible major leaguers this coming season.

Regulators Sign Free Agent Catcher
REGULATORS SIGN FREE AGENT CATCHER
Albuquerque Journal March 6, 2011 The signing of a 30 year old catcher to a minor league contract is usually not that big of a deal. However, when that player is the first player an organization ever signs to a contract it is. The Regulators held a press conference stating Japanese catcher Hisashi Kawata was inked to a minor league contract last night. Kawata a career .270 hitter with over 750 AB’s in Japan is expected to compete for a starting position during Spring Training. “I’m extremely excited and happy to be with Albuquerque and want to be a good team member” Kawata said through his interpreter. **************** Career statistics Hisashi Kawata Catcher Bats: Left Throws: Right

Regulators Sign Minor League Outfielder
REGULATORS SIGN MINOR LEAGUE OUTFIELDER
Albuquerque Journal March 29, 2011 The Regulators and minor league outfielder Luis Soto agreed to a minor league contract today. While there is little debate Soto is talented. Injuries have hampered the 24 year old development. During his 4 year professional career he was twice named to a Minor League All Star game. However, he has lost parts of 2 seasons to injury. Most recently, he lost 7 months to a shoulder injury last year. ************************ Luis Soto Bats Both Throws Right
TEAM NOTES: Two Regulators that had an inside track on a starting position suffered recent injuries. OF Clay Timpner suffered a strained posterior cruciate ligament. 2B Josh Davies has a sore throwing arm.

ALBUQUERQUE WRAPS UP FIRST SPRING TRAINING
Albuquerque Journal April 2, 2011 Sure they finished their first spring Training record with an unimpressive 10-14 record. Sure Joe Saunders lead the team in strikeouts. So what, he also lead the team in walks and had the highest ERA. Sure Scott Olsen won the #4 starter spot. So what’s the big deal? He walked into Spring Training being told the closers job was his to lose. Well he didn’t lose the job, he just never won it. Sure…well you get the idea. These are pains with being an expansion team. Sometimes you end up with more questions than answers in life. While no one expects the Regulators to win 100 games. It is safe to say the 1962 New York Mets record for futility is safe. I think it’s safe to say this team should win at least 40 games. Time will tell exactly how many games they will win.

I am just about to start my season. So, I felt this is a good place to stop. Take count of the moves I have made and the moves I still have left. To make easier on myself, I have a chart similar to the one below I use to keep count. I figured this would be easy for those who may want to follow this story line to use also.
I have only made 2 roster moves so far. Both quite frankly out of necessity. I doubt either one will contribute much in the long run. C Hisashi Kawata OF Luis Soto

Thanks....I still want to do a quick roster breakdown prior to my first sim. But, after that I'm gonna start season 1. If you or anyone, for that matter, have any ideas to make this more interesting feel free to drop a line.

Regulators 2011 Yearbook Released
Starting Rotation
LHP Ricky Romero is the #1 starter entering the season. He has always gave up too many hits and home runs. He fastball tops out at about 87 MPH, so he must mix in his curveball and changeup to be effective. LHP Jacob McGee, the Regulators first overall pick, is a high risk and high reward type pitcher. He can rack up the K’s, however he is a flyball pitcher on a team that won’t manufacture many runs. LHP Dallas Braden has been very successful in AAA. He is similar to McGee in most facets. Though at the age of 28, he needs to show quickly he can contribute at the big league level. LHP Scott Olsen is a 6 year veteran. Talented and young he may move up to the top of staff before the season ends. The talent is there and he is cocky enough to go inside when needed. RHP Jacob Marceaux is the lone righty on the starting staff. The very definition of a control pitcher. He must use all 4 of his pitches to be successful. Bullpen RHP Scott Taylor,a starter by trade, begins the year as the first option out of the bullpen. Has a deep arsenal and uses each pitch as needed. His fastball tops out at 93 MPH. Though he also throws a sinker, slider, curveball, changeup and a cutter. LHP Joe Saunders is the elder statesman of staff at 29 years old. Saunders once thought to be a possible middle of rotation starter, developed into a middle reliever with control issues. LHP Garrett Olson control is a major issue with Olson. He must keep the ball down and not surrender too many hits as he prone to do. RHP Andrew Fiorenza another possible starter is big and strong and seldom gives up homeruns. With a solid week or two he may move into a starting job. RHP Jared Lansford is a groundball pitcher with a fastball that hits 94 MPH. In 148 innings last year he only walked 27 batters. His role will probably expand as the season wears on. RHP Steven Marek throws a heavy 98 MPH fastball. He doesn’t give up many homeruns or walks. Primary a starter in the minors. He has only 18 career big league games, all in relief. RHP Jay Buente a tall and lanky righty with solid control and a fastball that can reach the low 90’s will begin the year with a tenuous hold on the closer role. If he gets off to a rocky start the Regulators won’t hesitate to move someone else into the closer position. Catchers LHB Cole Armstrong is a weak hitting catcher with little power. On most teams he would be a bench player. LHB Hisashi Kawata an import from Japan he has never been a starting catcher at any phase of his career. Will begin the year as #2 catcher but he may take over the starter role if Armstrong’s bat proves too weak. Infielders RHB Jonathan Ash a corner infielder with little power. He seldom strikes out or walks. Last year he finally developed into a doubles hitter. If that trend continues he may be a solid bottom of order bat. RHB Valentin Ramos has hit for average the last 3 years. The down side to that is he has never played above Short Season A ball. It is uncertain if he is ready for the majors at this time. The Regulators might have to rush his development hoping he can learn develop on the fly. RHB Dan Uggla has hit for power and average in the past. Although he hasn’t done it consistently. The last couple years he has cut down on his strikeouts, which in turn improved his OBP. His versatility if anything should prove valuable. SWITCH Eider Torres streaky hitter with modest extra base power. His glove is the main reason he made it to the majors. RHB Freddy Sanchez don’t strikeout much and can hit for a solid average. Won’t put many over the fence. He can however bang a few balls off the fences. Sanchez is the oldest player on the Regulators roster at 33 years old. RHB Carlos Rojas very similar to Eider Torres with one exception. He has absolutely no power at all. He mostly slaps at the ball. He does field well and can play 2B,3B and SS. Outfielders RHB David Anderson has never played above Rookie League. He has shown though he can hit for a good average. Has decent speed and will steal a few bases. LHB Clay Timpner a career .249 hitter with over 1800 AB’s. He does have modest speed and can steal a base when needed. On most teams he would be no more than a fourth outfielder. LHB Vince Woods possess outstanding speed and has topped 40 stolen bases 2 of the last 4 seasons. May still develop a power stroke and could easily lead the league in triples one day. SWITCH Luis Soto injuries have derailed his climb to majors. Lost 7 full months last year to a shoulder injury. Has good doubles ability and is a career .290 hitter in over 1200 minor league at bats. Regulators will give him every opportunity to claim a starting job. RHB Darrel McKinney earned the nickname “Dirt Dog” by teammates. He loves getting dirty. Aggressive on the base paths and field. His minor league stats are impressive and he will finally make his big league debut this year.

Week One In Review
Game 1 Line Score Sunday, April 3rd, 2011
Albuquerque Regulators 0 1 0 0 0 2 1 1 1 6 Milwaukee Brewers 0 0 0 0 2 0 0 0 0 2 WP R. Romero (1-0) LP B. Sheets (0-1) 6-2 WIN Game Notes: OF Darrel “Dirt Dog” McKinney a guy that I’m placing a lot of hope in ended up going 1-5, with 6 LOB’s. Hopefully, he is better than that and I didn’t over estimate his talent. On the good side, C Cole Armstrong a guy I didn’t expect too much was my RBI man this game going 2-4 and grabbing 2 RBI’s. OFFENSIVE MVP: 1B Jonathan Ash
PITCHING MVP: SP Ricky Romero
Game 2 Line Score Monday, April 4th, 2011 Albuquerque Regulators 1 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 2 Milwaukee Brewers 0 0 3 0 0 1 1 0 X 5 WP J. Beckett (1-0) LP J. McGee (0-1) SV S. Fujita (1) 2-5 LOSS Games Notes: 4 Players ended up taking 0 for the game (OF Vince Woods, 3B Freddy Sanchez, C Cole Armstrong, SS Carlos Rojas). Only OF Clay Timpner (2-4) had more than 1 hit. The 6 runs the day before might be an aberration. MR Scott Taylor wasn’t exactly lights on, however he did a much better job than SP Jacob McGee who gave up 4 ER’s in 6 IP’s. OFFENSIVE MVP: 1B Jonathan Ash
PITCHING MVP: MR Scott Taylor
Game 3 Line Score Tuesday, April 5th, 2011 Albuquerque Regulators 0 0 0 0 1 0 1 0 0 2 Milwaukee Brewers 0 0 2 0 0 0 1 0 X 3 WP F. Garcia (1-0) LP S. Taylor (0-1) SV S. Fujita (2) 2-3 LOSS Game Notes: The offense stumbled for the second straight game. The 7 and 8 hitters carried the offense. Carlos Rojas (1-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI’s) and Eider Torres (2-3, 1 RBI). OF Vince Woods and 3B Freddy Sanchez are batting well below .200. SP Dallas Braden pitched a pretty nice game. OFFENSIVE MVP: SS Carlos Rojas
PITCHING MVP: SP Dallas Braden
Game 4 Line Score Wednesday, April 6th, 2011 Los Angeles (N) Dodgers 0 0 0 3 0 0 1 0 0 4 Albuquerque Regulators 0 5 0 1 0 4 1 0 X 11 WP S. Olsen (1-0) LP B. Penny (0-1) 11-4 WIN Game Notes: The offense exploded again, it seems to be feast or famine offensively. 1B Jonathan Ash continues his offensive onslaught. He is easily leading the team in BA (.412). 3B Freddy Sanchez bat looks to be waking up. He is really about the teams only option at 3B, so any offense he brings is an added benefit. The offense bailed out SP Scott Olsen he gave u 3 HR’s in 7 IP’s. OFFENSIVE MVP: 3B Freddy Sanchez
PITCHING MVP: MR Stephen Marek
Game 5 Line Score Thursday, April 7th, 2011 Los Angeles (N) Dodgers 1 0 2 0 0 0 0 0 1 4 Albuquerque Regulators 0 0 0 0 3 1 0 4 X 8 WP J. Lansford (1-0) LP J. Jennings (0-1) SV A. Fiorenza (1) 8-4 WIN Game Notes: Several batters are starting to get hot, while others continue to struggle. The infield is doing most the hitting. The lone exceptions being C Cole Armstrong (.188) who is struggling horribly and OF Clay Timpner (.364) who is right now looking like an everyday player. OF Darrel McKinney is really struggling, I am considering giving OF Luis Soto a few starts to see how he reacts. The Bullpen pitched great with 5 pitchers only allowing 1 run in 3 innings. So, the “Pitching MVP” is the bullpen this game. The only bad outing for the bullpen crew was CL Jay Buentes. I am now moving him from the closer role and going more to a bullpn by committee. OFFENSIVE MVP: 1B Valentin Ramos
PITCHING MVP: Bullpen members: S. Taylor, J. Saunders, J. Buente, A. Fiorenza
Game 6 Line Score Friday, April 8th, 2011 Los Angeles (N) Dodgers 0 1 1 5 0 0 0 3 0 10 Albuquerque Regulators 0 2 0 2 0 2 0 2 3 11 WP A. Fiorenza (1-0) LP H. Kuo (0-1) 11-10 WIN Game Notes: This game was a shootout with both teams taking turns putting runs on the board. OF Darrel McKinney got his first RBI of the year exploding for 7 in one game. Ten different Regulators had RBI’s in the game. Hisashi Kawata started the game at catcher going 3-3, 3 RBI’s. However, Armstrong evidently don’t want to lose his job. He came up big in a pinch appearance. Obviously, in a game like this the pitching staff takes a hit. This was a bad outing for SP Ricky Romero. He allowed 7 ER’s, walked 8 and allowed 4 hits in 3.2 IP’s. OFFENSIVE MVP: OF Darrel McKinney
PITCHING MVP: A. Fiorenza
Game 7 Line Score Saturday, April 9th, 2011 Albuquerque Regulators 0 0 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 Houston Astros 0 0 4 1 0 0 1 0 X WP P. Trinidad (1-1) LP J. McGee (0-2) SV B. Lidge (1) 2-6 LOSS Game Notes: 2B Dan Uggla got the start and really responded going 2-4. SS Carlos Rojas picked up the only 2 RBI’s of the game for the Regulators. Eider Torres, got a rare start at 1B, left 5 runners on base. While his BA is great .391 he constantly leaves runners on base. It’s very annoying at times. SP Jacob Mcgee took a pounding giving up 5 runs in 3.2 IP’s his ERA jumped to 8.38. OFFENSIVE MVP: SS Carlos Rojas
PITCHING MVP: MR Stephen Marek

Go Regulators!!!! Got a fan here, just bought a season ticket..... 4-3 is amazing from this bunch, only expecting to see about 50 wins from this group.
Good Luck with your dynasty. BTW, love the format you are using..... |

Thanks Sandman for the show of support. I am hoping for between 50-60 wins myself.
As far as season tickets, they are non refundable and if you want better seats send me a check for $100 dollars LOL. If you have any ideas to make these a better read feel free to suggest. BTW, what's your feel on comp picks for losing FA's. I am undecided if I wanna have that turned on or off.

I always play with the compensation off. Just a personal preference. My belief is if you wanted the guy you would have kept him or if you wanted something for him you would have dealt him. The compensation is too big of a penalty for trying to improve your team.....

Ya I agree with your point. I was kinda wishy washy on what to do. I think I'll turn it off now.
Thanks
