Off Lite Topic for fun: What Player is a must have when you start a league?

I guess it's like asking "Who's your favorite player". But, when you start a league and manage/coach a team who's a must have practically all the time? Any era any player is allowed. Another question is what is your favorite year team of all time?

For a long time I guess Babe Ruth was a must have player when playing old time baseball. I began with a Coleco spinner baseball game that my older brother passed down to me. You put these round sheets of paper with the players names on them and a square was cut out of the middle and then pie cuts for what they would do and lay it on this cardboard playing field where the spinner was and spin for their actions. I remember Babe Ruth having the largest pie cut for HR's and I believe even Doubles as well and though I didn't have complete old time teams I would just throw all the sheets of players together and makup teams and then play the one that got Babe Ruth. I think it basically had all the great players from Babe Ruths time to that present day because I remember Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Willie Mays and Roberto Clemente (for some reason my whole family laughed out loud when I would say Roberto Clemente was up to bat. I musta pronounced his name funny or sumthin). Even after I got older they would make fun and say "Do you still play with Roberto Clemente?" haha

Modern day has me almost specifically doing everything I can to get Albert Pujols. I guess many might pick B. Bonds, but, there's just something about Pujols that is a must have for my team.

When I first started playing board game baseball back in the late 60's early 70's (Coleco, APBA baseball, Sports Illustrated (lol who remembers SI Baseball game?) and Negamco and Big League Manager Baseball) it was the Reds that I enjoyed playing most (when I finally got a full version game and not a handmedown). The 75 Reds probably my favorite team of all. If I played in "snail mail" (bet you kids don't even know what snail mail leagues were like lol) leagues I always had to have the Reds for a long long time even being a Texas residence.

When the Washington Senators became the Texas Rangers that is when I became a Rangers fan and the Cin Reds became a thing of the past. I never did really care for the Astros, though that was the only stadium and the one time in my life seeing major league teams play that I ever went to and who did they play?? The Cin Reds and lost 4 to 1. lol Amazing how I can still remember that. That was in the old Astrodome as well. That was the day of B. Aspromonte (I think that was his name lol) I used to call him Astromonte haha.

Lol this turned from a couple of lil ole questions to "my history playing baseball games" lol. sorry

I only play fictional, but I always find myself attracted to the really good middle infielders in their prime. I don't know why exactly, but Tony Fernandez being my favourite player growing up and then Roberto Alomar being probably the key ingredient to the Jays' World Series wins might have something to do with it. Big boppers are great and all, but for me there's nothing like a flashy up-the-middle defensive stop to tell you that this is baseball and it's the greatest game there is.

When I played Strat-O-Matic, my team MVP for six years straight was Ivan Rodriguez. In 2007 I play fictional, and my first pick is always the best young catcher available.

Speaking of I. Rodriquez I've always thought that was the worst deal the Rangers ever did was letting Pudge get away. I was a BIG fan of the Rangers while pudge was on the team and kinda lost interest as he and Gonzales and other greats from the team started disappearing. You ever notice how many players go on to be stars that origionally started out on the Rangers???!! Pudge is another player I attempt to get as well.

I'm the type that will trade every 5 star prospect I get to build the team I want NOW instead of building for the future. I find future building just keeps you behind as when you finally get one that's ready another is ready for retirement or free agency or something that screws the whole process. I usually always build a winner by the 2nd year after starting a league. Many times the first year if the Rangers still have some decent players to trade away. This year man they don't have crap, Blalock and Texieria are getting older. Blalock isn't the batter he used to be. Mench is gone (another stupid trade). Soriano is gone (another stupid loss). Nix, he just lost it last year. He may never return to status. Dullucci he was a favorite as well. he's one of those hero batters. He suks most of the time, but, in a given situation when the game is on the line he'd come thru with a shot, he's gone as well. Now they got these new kids on the block I don't see much talent in yet. Kinda boring to watch them now.

They get an old hasbeen in Sosa just for fan interest, he's not going to do squat this year you watch. I get soooo pissed cause the Rangers won't get any Pitching talent except old hasbeens. Rogers and Ryan to name a couple, dang can't remember that OLD knuckle baller (I wanna say Charlie Huff is that him?) they had in the old days. They've always had OLD pitching or rookie pitchers they gave up who went on to become good pitchers elsewhere, then when they get old they get them back. lol Who's Ricky Helling playing for these days? lol Didn't they have Kevin Brown at one time also?? They had a good closer in Osuka (sp) and what do they do they go and get ANOTHER CLOSER in Gagne when they need STARTING PITCHERS!!

Lol If only I could be the owner/manager for a couple of years for the Rangers and given an open checkbook. I'd give the fans something to cheer about. I would go out and make a deal for Mark Prior and Albert Pujols. Beg Roger Clemons to pitch just two years for me. lol Add some speed to the top of the batting order and contact hitting for more base stealing and h/r opportunities. I could live with Soriano back at second base. Find a 5 star prospect pitcher to put in the rotation at 2nd or 3rd spot and then take over the division. Bring Pudge back in as catcher. Just a lil over 100,000,000 budget and I think I could build a nice team out of the Real Rangers. haha I always do in OOTPBB lol.

Talking

Having played out a number of deadball seasons I realised how great an all-round player was Honus Wagner.

No.

But I have always thought that the Expos could've been something if they coulda kept people around ..

IE ..

Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, Vladimir Guerrero, Larry Walker, Moises Alou, Andres Galarraga, Jeff Reardon, Tim Raines, Andre Dawson, Gary Carter, etc.

I've always wondered what they could've done if they were able to add to those base players (during the 80s, 90s, and 00s) instead of having to let 'em go.
