Sports quote of the year...

The Cowboys kicking woes are fast becoming the stuff of legend. BUT...Governor Abbot just hit one so far out of the park it may never land when he said, "I could kick better than that guy."

Am I the only one here who can look past the politics and see the enormous humor of a wheelchair bound man saying he can kick better than a professional place kicker?

Or…were others simply unaware?

I thought that was pretty funny! If there had been a Like or Laughy emoji, I'd have clicked it (I can't see how politics would've entered into whether one thinks it was funny or not, unless someone really takes politics - and themselves - too seriously...)

I really felt for that kid yesterday. I'm glad that he rebounded to make a couple of FG's and that, even with the blocked PAT, there's no real way to pin the loss on him...

So many do anymore that I'm often hesitant to post because of backlash. It's all sides, too...not picking on any group in particular.

Remember when we were younger and you could hash out the world's problems even with someone totally opposed to you, and afterwards it was like, "That was really cool. Wanna grab dinner and a brew?" and they'd do it? I do. Had a lot of good friends back then who were diametrically opposed to me, but when their associates would ask them about me, they'd say, "That's just Bob."

As a Texan, I can confirm this is not a one time thing for our governor. During a press conference years ago, he promised voters he'd stand up for Texas on multiple occasions (winking each time and smiling).

That's my type of humor, but I needed that one explained to me, because I was simply unaware.

Great joke, but I actually felt bad for Maher. Not because I'm a Cowboys fan, but I'm watching an end to someone's career. A possible end. He had what people are calling the yips. Whatever that is. A mental issue where all of a sudden you can't do what you easily did previously.

When I was young we didn't have video games or a lot of electronics to keep us occupied except crappy Atari and Intelivision. We used to play sports outside 24/7.

One of the things we did was go to the field and have FG competitions. For like a dollar a kick. Sort of like playing horse in basketball. If you start missing too much change the spot. In other words, reset. Which is why I can't understand why he kept insisting on kicking from the left hash over and over again.

Humor is dying in America. Too many sensitive people getting in the way of humor.

Ya, I felt bad for him, too. Teams change kickers in the offseason for various reasons, so it's possible the Cowboys will move on from him for reasons not having to do with his case of the yips. Regardless, I would think that the Cowboys and/or another team as training camp approaches will look at it as a temporary thing (since he appeared to get over it during the 2nd half of last Sunday's game). And hopefully he will back to normal next season...

And at least he doesn't have to spend this offseason thinking that his case of the yips kept his team from advancing in the playoffs... Needing him to kick 2nd half field goals (which he made) rather than scoring touchdowns, and otherwise floundering on offense, kept the 'boys from advancing. Not Maher and his case of the yips.

lmao no it changed. It changes every generation. Just because zoomers don’t laugh at the edgy crap we Gen Xers thought was oh so hilarious in the 90s doesn’t mean they aren’t laughing their ass off at their own brand of humor. It tends to be more self-deprecating than in the past, maybe, and there’s a lot of anti-humor out there (which for me is fantastic because I loved me some Norm MacDonald back in the day) but… this happens every generation. I’m sure the borscht belt crowd thought humor was dying in the 80s as well…

I will say that as a Gen Xer who performs improv comedy in Chicago as a hobby, there is a transition one has to make. “Don’t punch down” is not a new saying - it goes back AFAIK to a George Carlin quote about why he didn’t like Andrew Dice Clay in the early 90s - but it’s never been more tru than it is today. A person who’s wheelchair bound can easily make the above joke today without batting an eye. Some able bodied comic making that joke is going to get booed off the stage. Again, in spite or perhaps because of this, people still manage to find lots and lots of things to laugh at. I’ve had sets where the show just kind of stopped for a few seconds because everyone was laughing so hard (yes, in improv! It happens). I’m friends with folks who are in all-Asian and all-Latinx (I know that’s a word that gets grief amongst some Latino/a/x communities but the name of the group is literally “Club Latinx”) and those folks put on great shows themselves.

There is still lots and lots and lots of funny. You just can’t punch down anymore.

I see a specific former President making fun of a disabled man, and shake my head. I like your term, "punch down."

That’s the problem. Humor isn’t politics. Politics has no place here.
