Markus: Question re: team logos

I like the automaticaly generated team logo idea. Gives each team a logo until I take the time to find or create one.

The only thing I don't like is the font. Looks too modern.

If it isn't already in the game, it is possible to code into the game an option to use different fonts for the logo?

An added advantage would be different styles for eras. We could keep the default font for modern era teams but maybe use a script style font for a early 1900's league.

I was thinking the same thing. When I make logos for my solo leagues they're really not all that much different than what OOTP2006 generates. The only considerations are: background colour, font colour, outline colour, text (usually only the first letter of the city), and the font. It sounds like we can change all of these but the outline colour (it'd be nice to have an option for this too, but I'd rank it last) and the font. If the game is generating these logos one time and just using a saved file then having the actual font as an option shouldn't be too much of a problem and would allow for a nice wide variety in logos.

This is a good idea.

I'm with you on this. This would be a mild addition of course but an overall pleasant one.

That is a good one, and I'll point to it in the Beta forum.

OK, I suggest posting freeware font suggestions here then (buying commercial fonts for commercial use is far too expensive)

I was actually thinking that the game could select from the fonts we have on our own computers. And if someone doesn't have any non-standard fonts then maybe someone could compile a collection of some freeware fonts for others to download. If it's not possible to select our own fonts then having ones included with the game is definitely better than nothing though. Thanks.

This sounds like a cool idea to me. Probably better for cross-platform compatibility, too.

But not easy enough to code right now. So, let's try to find a freeware font that you guys like.

You heard the man. Let's start scouring the web guys.

I'm thinking that we're going to need five of them, one for each era:

1. Deadball (1900-1920)

2. Baseball Rebirth (1921-1945)

3. The Golden Years (1946-1960)

4. Baseball Boom (1961-1979)

5. Modern Baseball (1980+)

Post the links to the each proposed fonts here.

My website-designing wife, looking over my shoulder, suggests that we combine the first two eras and the third and fourth one, and only have three fonts: one early, one middle, and one late.

I think this is a bit relatively unimportant... *shrug*

But, and good call to silvam, halfway down this page, is an OK font apparently called College. It's postcardware, so I figure you guys can whip up a couple of postcards to send to the guy?

In the grand scheme of things, this really is unimportant, especially since one can easily create a plain circular logo with any kind of font they desire and any kind of text they desire and add in there manually.

But hey, more options on even the most trivial of things can only be a good thing!

Or, at the very least, let us select from the fonts already used in the game.

Example of FM College team attached. Pretty basic baseball looking font. If I figure out how to attach I will.

Okay, I looked at free fonts per Silvam's recomendation.

For the Deadball and Baseball Rebirth eras (1900-1945) I suggest Madfont ( http://www.1001freefonts.com/fonts/mfonts.htm ).

For the Golden Years and Baseball Boom eras (1946-1979) I suggest Card Characters ( http://www.1001freefonts.com/fonts/cfonts2.htm ).

For the Modern Baseball era I agree with the previous recommendation of College ( http://www.1001freefonts.com/fonts/cfonts8.htm ).

My problem with Malleus' two last fonts is that they are quite thin and vertical - that makes the letters less visible, and I'm not sure that it's well adapted to logos. As for the first, isn't it perhaps a bit westernish? Deadball era baseball, or at least professional baseball, was much better developed on the East Coast, so I'm also wondering if that would be appropriate.

Another comment: to make the writing more visible (and I think we'll all agree that it's important, given the resemblance between logos), perhaps the chosen fonts should be bolded, in most cases.

They look good to me. College is maybe a little boring (and also looks like the font used on British number plates!), but I suppose that doesn't matter when it's just for a TLA.

I like Madfont, but would the characters be too wide to easily fit in the logo?
