The Nevada Dragons and the Long Road Ahead

I'm starting this in direct corralation to Chappy's KILLER dynasty about the Freedom. I'm in a similar
situation that he was when he took them over, only my Nevada Dragons haven't won squat in the 12 seasons
of the NPBL (not rebuilding a champ, more like a chump). I took over the team in mid-July of 2010, just
over a year ago. They were like a game into 1st place and we blew it in the last 2 weeks (I didn't do
a lot to that team).

After a rampage of trades in the offseason in an attempt to get over the hump with some proven talent,
we've fallen flat on our face this season. We're mired in 3rd in the Great Explorers League Western Division,
with the top 2 teams in the division getting to play baseball in October. 3rd sounds great, only we're a
nice fat 15.5 games back of 2nd place. Let's just say we won't have a problem watching Monday Night
Football in October.

This will be pretty similar to Chappy's posts, I'll cover pretty much the same things. For those not in
the know, the NPBL - National Pastime Baseball League is currently in August of 2011 (it's 12th season).

Upcoming posts will have...

- A team preview!

- A look into team history!

- A look at the league as a whole!

- A look at the Big Plan (TM)

- The first sim recap!

I hope even one person can enjoy this as much as I have Chappy's. Heck, I joined an online league solely
off of that dynasty (I only have OOTP5 at the time, not 6 like NPBL uses).

Feel free to shred me moves, offer advice, the whole lot. As you will see, I need all of the help I can
get my hands on!

Postitional Recap - Catchers

The catching position has to arguably be our weakest. In fact, the franchise doesn't appear to have
had one at all of any great caliber. Here is a look into who we have, and how much they can help. I am
listing ages for Opening Day 2012, as 2011 is toast. Stats for Catchers are through August 21st, 2011.

Sadly, Hui might be our best Catcher. Yes, he has a barely over .500 OPS. That's how sad it is. He
could be the worst starting catcher ever in fact. He was in AAA for most of this season, but our
Opening Day Catcher (Theissen, below) struggled so bad we called Hui up. Not much to say here.
Also, pathetically Hui is our 8th best prospect. Ouch.

Current Impact: 1 out of 10
Future Impact: 2.5 out of 10 (if he reaches 8 in contact)

Good luck with this new dynasty. I love reading Chappys each and every update, hopefully this one will become just like that for me!

If he reaches an 8, he'll be fine. Not many catchers in this league have big sticks...

Comments: I was on the lookout for a new catcher last season, and landed on grabbing Thiessen in a deal
that was primarily for another player. He looked decent enough, just that he never got solid playing
time. So I gave him the time, and he gave me lots of outs. I'm still holding out hope that he can
at least be a backup, and will probably get him back to platoon status with Hui.

Current Impact: 2 out of 10
Future Impact: 1 out of 10. He sucks now, and is getting old (32)

Comments: Salazar has been the backup here in Nevada since getting the callup. Though looking at his
stats, I am considering giving him a shot as well for the remainder of the season. He has torn up
AAA this season, and even shown some power at the plate.

Current Impact: 2 out of 10
Future Impact: 3 out of 10 (he could be the best of the bunch?)

This is neat, other than the TWB threads, I can't think of another league that has this kind of coverage. If anything, having something to compare with makes it easier to appreciate how far you have to go and how much you improve (when you do improve!).

I think, at times, dynasty writers forget the numbers from a team or player don't mean much without the context of a league.

Comments: Festa was a recent offseason acquisition to boost the teams 1st base outlook. As you will see,
our previous 1B was nothing to be happy about. Festa has actually been spot on, with his OPS right at
career level. He's also already got a career high in 2Bs, and could match last years HR total. He even
has an outside shot at the 100 Walk mark. Overall I'm happy with the trade I made, though it'd be nice
to see Festa somehow get back to pre-2008 levels. I think we can manage with him at first for the next
2-3 seasons, but I need to be on the lookout for an eventual replacement now so I am prepared for his
decline.

Current Impact: 6 out of 10
Future Impact: 5 out of 10 (practically 0 past the 2015 season I expect)

Comments: Meet Chet. Chet is our old First Baseman. Chet sucks. Serious, 3000 ABs and just over the
Mendoza Line. Honestly, I'm surprised the old owner let him keep going that long. I yanked him pretty
much ASAP. He's got power, he just can't make contact at all. Sure he walks, but he strikes out
twice as often. I think *I* could hit .182, ok maybe not, but still.

Between him and backup C Salazar it looks like our 2003 draft (9th overall in each round) was a
total disaster.

Comments: Jason just joined the organization this offseason in my 2nd draft pick since taking ownership.
Though he isn't your prototype 1B, he could have a future with the team. He's got solid ratings in 3
slots and great speed for a 1B and plays good D. He's already in AA this season, and next year, possibly
in AAA could be a key indicator to his success.

Sim Recap 8/21-8/31

Even though I'm not done with the team recap, I want to get my format down for the sim rundowns.
So here goes. Keep in mind. We stink.

Nevada at Washington, 8/21 - 6-5 Win. We blasted 4 homeruns, and Ray Festa 11th of the season in the 8th
inning provided the difference. 2B Moncayo (26th), SS Chris Lott (23rd) and 3B Spike Halpen (8th) also
went yard. Halpern knocked 4 hits. Reliever James Barker picked up his 2nd win in relief of Miguel
Cordova.

Nevada at Washingon, 8/22 - 11-3 win. The offense keeps trucking with 11 runs, including 7 in the first
3 innings. CF DiBenedetto knocked his 17th Homer, and 1B Festa smacked 5 hits and drove in 4 runs!
Starter Richard Herron picked up his 10th win.

Oregon at Nevada, 8/23 - 5-3 Loss in 12. We knocked 15 hits, but only 3 crossed the plate. Moncayo and
Festa each had 3 hits, and new platoon catcher Salazar had 2 hits and 2 runs. Gene Foxworth went 7
strong innings, but reliever Arnie Stier allowed 2 in the 12th for his 2nd loss

Oregon at Nevada, 8/24 - 5-2 Win. Back on track with our 3rd win in 4 on the sim. Cyril Foland hit
a 2-run Homer in the 4th to put us ahead for good. SP Kirby Rudolph ran his record to 7-9 and closer
Herman Trottier picked up his 29th Save.

Oregon at Nevada, 8/25 - 9-4 Win. A big 8-run 6th inning got us yet another W. Big Melvin Hagberg, starting
in place of the red hot Festa knocked a big 2-out 3-run shot in the 6th inning to ice the game. Starter
Jose Leonos was efficient and effective with his 11th win

8/26 - OFF

Utah at Nevada, 8/27 - 4-3 Win. Wow, here I go saying how bad we are, and we win 5 of 6 to start the
dynasty. PH Byron Thiessen and 2B Rey Moncayo had run scoring singles in the bottom of the 7th to
get us the 4-3 lead which we held onto. SP Miguel Cordova ran his record to 8-3 and Trottier picked up
save #30.

Utah at Nevada, 8/28 - 9-2 Win. Again the bats come out to play, Chris Lott hit a 2nd inning Grand Slam,
his 25th Homer of the year and Richard Herron pitched 8 strong innings for his 2nd Win of the sim.

Utah at Nevada, 8/29 - 10-0 Win. I am still in shock. We explode for 12 hits and add 8 walks in the romp.
LF Mike Doctor cleared the bases with a 1st inning double and Ray Festa stayed hot with 2 more hits,
2 RBI's and a walk. Gene Foxworth went the distance, allowing 4 hits, 1 walk and striking out 4.

Kansas at Nevada, 8/30 - 3-1 Loss. All good things come to an end, as we only get 5 hits. New C Salazar
knocks in a run with a double, and Spike Halpern and Chris Lott get 2 hits. Kirby Rudolph is the
tough luck loser falling to 7-10.

Kansas at Nevada, 8/31 - 4-3 win in 12. Wow an 8-2 sim! OF Cyril Foland hit a leadoff homer in the
bottom of the 12th, his 14th to get us in the dugout. What a game! Kansas tied it in the 9th, scratching
out a run. James Barker was fantastic, shutting Kansas down for 2 innings and getting the W.

Oregon 55 77 .417 23.5 4-6
Washington 44 88 .333 34.5 2-8
Well, we gained 6 games on Utah, but it doesn't really matter with just 31 to play and 15 back.
.500 baseball isn't out of the question, we would really have to play well to get it though.

season. Overall, we overplayed our standards this past sim.

There's the staff, it's iffy at best. I don't get the low K totals, I think it must be a league thing
(Chappy?). Only 2 guys who average 4.5 K/9 or better.

Rankings:

Stolen Bases: 110 (8th)

Opponents AVG: .258 (21st)
HRs Allowed: 97 (T-8th)
Walks Allowed: 401 (21st)
Runs Allowed: 580 (21st)

As you can see, we're all O and not much pitching. I love being 1st in walks though. As you can see,
it makes a big impact on the bottom line (13th in Avg, but 5th in Runs).

Upcoming Schedule

9/1 vs Kansas Storm, 6th in the East, 56-76, Season Series 6-5 Nevada
9/2 vs Illinois Jethawks, 1st in the East, 87-44, Season Series 6-2 Illinois
9/3 vs Illinois Jethawks
9/4 vs Illinois Jethawks
9/5 vs Illinois Jethawks
9/6 @ Wisconsin Lumberjacks, 4th in the East, 66-65, Season Series 7-2 Wisconsin
9/7 @ Wisconsin Lumberjacks
9/8 @ Wisconsin Lumberjacks
9/9 OFF
9/10 @ Texas Banditos, 3rd in the East, 71-60, Season series 5-4 Texas
9/11 @ Texas Banditos

Pretty rough sim for us as we go through the East. I'd take a 5-5 sim in a heartbeat.

Hope you enjoyed my first recap, I promise eventually I won't just be copying Chappy!

The K totals fell off league wide with the conversion to OOTP6. I'm not sure if too many players converted with high avoid K ratings or if too many pitchers converted with low stuff ratings.

Code:
YR FFL GEL
09 4.8 4.9 K/G
10 4.4 4.4 K/G
League-wide, the drop in K's per game was only by about half a K per game.

Yeah I think it is the low stuff ratings, most of my guys seem to have really low ratings there. I'm sure it will even out over time though.

Sim Recap 9/1/2011 - 9/11/2011

9/1 Kansas at Nevada - 9-0 WIN. The hits keep coming as we take the series against Kansas. Miguel Cordova
pitched 7.2 shutout innings, only allowing 5 hits. Offensively Clarence DiBennedetto led the way with
a 5-hit day, driving in 3 and striking his 31st double. Backup 2B Albert Estrada filled in nicely
for Moncayo, grabbing 3 hits, stealing a base and driving in 3.

9/2 Illinois at Nevada - 12-8 LOSS. The East division leaders show us who is boss with a blowout.
Richard Herron was jumped on for 5 runs in the first and Illinois never looked back. Offensively,
Spike Halpern added his 10th dinger, and Cyril Foland knocked in 3 runs. Reliever Bobby Hollenback
was also tattooed for 4 runs in 1/3rd of an inning.

9/3 Illinois at Nevada - 5-2 LOSS. Illinois again scores first (2 in the 1st) and takes home the win.
Gene Foxworth pitched admirably, gutting through 116 pitches and 7.2 innings with our depleted pen,
but the offense notched just 4 hits (though all doubles). Ray Festa and Cyril Foland knocked in our
runs.

9/4 Illinois at Nevada - 5-4 LOSS. Sense a pattern? This time the pen (Trottier) lets us down as Illinois
gets the deciding run in the 9th. Rey Moncayo hit a big 7th inning 2-run homer to tie it (27th) but
stud Jayhawk closer Deangelo Ramos was too much for us in the 9th.

9/5 Illinois at Nevada - 4-0 LOSS. Ouch, 4 game sweep for Illinois. The offense just couldn't break
them the last 3 games. Just 3 hits, highlighted by a pinch hit double by Thiessen. On a sad note,
starter Jose Leonos left the game with a Tight Shoulder after his 4th pitch. He'll be out the rest
of the recap. The loss went to Moses Tamez, dropping his record to 4-2.

9/6 Nevada at Wisconsin - 3-2 LOSS. The losing ways continue, as our 2-run 1st inning didn't hold up.
Ray Festa blasted his 12th homer, but Miguel Cordova couldn't make it stand up. He gave up 3 ER
in 7.1 innings, dropping his record to 9-4. Cyril Foland knocked 2 hits and had 2 walks as well.

9/7 Nevada at Wisconsin - 7-6 WIN in 10. Wow what a game. Back-and-forth the whole way. In the end
it was a 1-out double by Chris Lott followed by a 2-out single by Spike Halpern which got us the win.
Rey Moncayo hit 2 dingers, putting him at 29, and also added a double. What is worse, we again lost
a starting pitcher, as Richard Herron made just 14 pitches before leaving with a strained rotator cuff
in the 1st. He'll be gone for 4 weeks, so essentially his season has ended with an 11-9, 3.44 mark.

9/8 Nevada at Wisconsin - 4-1 WIN. We rebound to take this series, behind Gene Foxworth's complete
game 3-hitter. Gene K'd just 1 batter, but only allowed Alfonzo Ruvalcaba's 7th inning homerun.
Chris Lott paced the offense with a 2-out 2-run 3rd inning homer, his 26th. Cyril Foland and Spike
Halpern also added 2 hits.

9/9 OFF

9/10 Nevada at Texas - 5-1 WIN. We're back on a roll after an off-day to head straight south to Texas.
Kirby Rudolph allowed just an unearned run in 8 innings to run his record to 8-10. Trottier picked up
save number 31, his first this sim. Spike Halpern knocked 3 hits, DiBenedetto added a pinch hit homer,
his 19th. Foland added 2 MORE hits, and stole his 20th base. That's 4 straight multi-hit games for him.

41 runs in 9 games for us, a bit above average for us. I'm thinking I'll move Halpern into the 6-spot
for the rest of the year, see if he responds with even more improvement. He is now clearly performing
better than Doctor. Though struggling, I'm leaving Salazar in for the rest of the year. I need to see
if he can at all be the answer there. Thiessen seems to be a "known" quantity, I don't think he's got
a solid season in him. The question is, is he the best I've got?

Starting to look ugly with Herron done. We'll need to revamp the staff this season I think. Try and
get an ace any way we can. On the bright side, if the season ended now, we'd pick 10th. We might
be able to net a decent starter for down the road there.

Batting AVG: .241 (12th)
Homeruns: 126 (6th)
Walks: 427 (1st)
Stolen Bases: 116 (9th)
Runs Scored: 605 (4th)

Pitching ERA: 3.89 (21st)
Opponents AVG: .258 (21st)
HRs Allowed: 101 (8th)
Walks Allowed: 428 (21st)
Runs Allowed: 617 (21st)

Gotta love the high-powered Offense. Even though we're 12th in average, the walks put us 3rd in OBP.
If we could just tick that average up to .250, I think we'd score a TON of runs. Another issue is
strikeouts. We've struck out the 2nd most (728). Only 2 other teams are even over 700. And that is
even with our leadoff hitter, Moncayo, who has only K'd 14 times in almost 600 PA's.

Upcoming schedule

9/11 @ Texas Banditos - 76-64, 3rd in East, Series Season tied 5-5
9/12 @ Texas Banditos -
9/13 vs Colorado Rams - 83-57, 1st in West, Colorado leads series 9-7
9/14 vs Colorado Rams -
9/15 vs Washington Griffins - 47-93, 6th in West, Nevada leads series 8-4
9/16 vs Washington Griffins -
9/17 vs Oregon Owls - 60-80, 4th in West, Nevada leads series 8-4
9/18 vs Oregon Owls -
9/19 vs Oregon Owls -
9/20 OFF

Pretty average schedule for us, I think 5-4 is possible.

Good Luck on reaching .500 - I thought entering the season you'd be in the playoff mix, especially with Washington and Cali rebuilding.

I know I was really bummed it didn't happen. I thought I would surely have added the offense to do it. I just didn't anticipate the pitching staff deteriorating so quickly (Hollenbeck saved 30 games, now can't get anyone out in middle relief, Leonos hasn't been the same, Scroggin disappeared).

The only part that hurts is I dealt Danny Day to get this done. If I still had him, I wouldn't even bat an eye.

Comments: Rey was one of the big guns brough in this offseason to bolster the club. Tough to say the
slide to mediocrity is his fals. He's produced his 2nd best season ever, though he was jobbed out of
an All-Star nod. I think one of his best traits is his ability to avoid strikeouts, averaging one every
15.9 at-bats.

Current Impact: 8 out of 10
Future Impact: 3 out of 10. Even if he had an extra long career, he probably won't be a centerpiece of
the Dragon revival.

Comments: Cyril has probably been one of the top 5 players in Dragons history to this point. Though he now starts in the outfield. He's got
2 30/30 seasons, plus a 20/20 and 1 all-star appearance. This year, he started fast, faded and has
recouped this past sim to have an ok campaign. I don't know if we'll see the 07-08 Foland again though.

Comments: Frankly, I had never even noticed Ken before this post. I have so many friggin AAA players
who are like 28-31, it's ridiculous. I've cut 2-3 guys from C and 1B already, they were just too sorry
even for this team. That's part of why I am into this dynasty. Though Ken doesn't appear to be half bad.
He'll make an excellent emergency bench guy if I need him.

Comments: Albert is a long time Dragon, though he isn't the best option at this point. Hehe. Has actually
produced quite well the last 2 seasons, but next year, he'll be in the minors.

Comments: Lott, in my mind, has disappointed. Especially this season. Picked #1 overall 7 seasons ago,
he just hasn't produced average-wise (except for a glorious 2009). The power and speed are all there,
but to really take his game to the All-Star level, he needs to start hitting over .270. At just 29 (he
turned 4 days ago), he has a chance to set extraordinary career numbers, but not if he doesn't start
hitting for a higher average. He also struggles on defense, having made 30 errors this season.

Current Impact: 6 out of 10
Future Impact: 10 out of 10 (his ability to improve over the next 3-4 years is probably a top 3 indicator
of the teams' future success)

Comments: I can't figure Casey out. His ratings suggest future starter, but his production warrants
his release. Even worse, he's rated as our #1 minor league prospect. So why the sub .200 average?
Maybe it is OOTP's way of saying he'll just hit .200 in the bigs, so let's not get John's hopes up.
Either way, I'm thinking I may send him to AA in 2012, purely to see if that'll help him along.

Current Impact: 0 out of 10
Future Impact: 4 out of 10, he could make a solid bench player or good trade bait with development

Lott is having a tough year - reminds me a little of Ludwig Claus.

Yeah, I just don't get it. I don't think him hitting .250 this season would've made us a playoff contender or anything, but it hurts. I was counting on a pretty solid season from him.
