World Baseball Classic: 2015
The 2016 World Baseball Classic will go down as the most transformative event in the history of the sport. Played under the shadow of the global strike, the tournament saw the total collapse of the traditional powers and the birth of a new world order led by the Caribbean and the rising "Minnows."
The Group Stage: The Giants Fall
The "Replacement Era" proved disastrous for the established elites. USA finished at a shocking 8–14, tied for the worst record in the field, while the defending champion India (10–12) failed to even make the tiebreaker round.
Meanwhile, Nigeria, Peru, and Japan all saw their dreams die in heartbreaking 11–12 tiebreaker losses to Spain, China, and France.
Bangladesh was the top dog in pool play, with Martinique, Belize and Russia rounding out the top 4. Sint Maarten, Mexico, GB, and Bolivia made up the second tier, with a game higher seed advantage. The final four were the aforementioned Spain, China, France, alongside Indonesia.
The knockout stage belonged to the underdogs. Martinique, once the 16th and final seed in the North America Cup, proved that their "Cinderella" tag was an understatement. They marched through the bracket with terrifying efficiency, sweeping Great Britain and Russia to reach the finals.
On the other side of the bracket, Sint Maarten, the team that famously eliminated Martinique in the NAC, proved they were no fluke either, beating Spain, upsetting 3 seed Belize, and then upsetting the top-seeded Bangladesh in a 4–2 Semifinal thriller.
The Finals: Martinique vs. Sint Maarten
In an all-Caribbean final that would have been unthinkable three years ago, Martinique sought revenge for their NAC exit. They found it in a 4–2 series victory, clinching the world title and completing a crazy tournament under crazy conditions and a crazy story.
WBC Champion: Martinique
WBC Runner-up: Sint Maarten
3rd Place: Russia, Bangladesh
The sheer embarrassment of the USA, China, and India’s performance, coupled with the undeniable star power and TV ratings generated by the Martinique/Sint Maarten rivalry, forced the hands of the leagues. Immediately following the tournament, the WWF caved to the WWFPA.
The New Global Labor Agreement:
The Right to Play: Every player now has the absolute right to represent their nation in any sanctioned tournament. Only the player has the power to reject a call-up.
The Triple-Check Medical Protocol: To prevent "fake" injury blockades by clubs, a player’s fitness is now determined by a panel of three: the Team Doctor, the National Team Doctor, and an Independent Third-Party Physician.
The Compensation Model: Teams are no longer "losing" assets for nothing. Clubs now receive a direct payout for every player on a national roster, with bonuses scaled to how high that nation finishes in the tournament.
