Pittsburgh Express (9-17) @ New York Aces (15-11)
Aces Win Series 2-1
Serrano's game 3 performance spoils Aces chance to Sweep.

Here's the skinny: The New York Aces and Pittsburgh Express faced off in a three-game series that highlighted the Aces' dominance and the Express's struggles. In Game 1, New York secured a 7-5 victory thanks to Robby Chacon's 3-run homer in the fourth inning, which set the tone for the game. The Express continued to falter in Game 2, losing 10-3 as Raul Juarez led the Aces with a home run and three RBIs, supported by Chris Frison's three-hit performance. Pittsburgh finally found some success in Game 3, pulling out a narrow 8-7 win, with Antonio Serrano's three-hit game and Luis Hard's clutch walk in the eighth inning proving decisive. The series left the Express at 9-17, struggling to gain momentum, while the Aces reinforced their strong start.

GAME 1 - Express Dealt 7-5 Loss by New York
The New York Aces cut down the Pittsburgh Express by the score of 7-5, with the largest share of the credit going to designated hitter Robby Chacon. Chacon was 2 for 4 with a home run, while scoring 2 and driving in 3 for the Aces. New York reliever Matt Martinson got the win, raising his record to 2-1. Doug Farmer was tagged with the loss. Devon John closed it out for his 8th save.

With New York leading 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth, Chacon hit a slider from Doug Farmer for a 3-run home run. It was his 4th home run of the season and put the Aces ahead, 7-2.

"We'll pop the top on a cold beverage and get back to work tomorrow," Chacon said.

The Express fall to 8-16 and continue their uninspiring start to the 1981 season.

GAME 2 - Pittsburgh Falls Again, 10-3
Aces right fielder Raul Juarez put his stamp on his team's 10-3 win over the Pittsburgh Express. Juarez went 2-4 with a home run and was hit by a pitch, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 3 for New York in the contest. The Express, now 8-17, continue their sluggish start.

Chris Frison, who finished 5th in the ABC in doubles with 36 last year, chipped in a run-scoring single for New York in the bottom of the fifth. For the game, the left fielder had 3 hits in 5 at-bats with 1 home run, 2 singles, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBI.

"We played a good game and came out on top," said Frison.

GAME 3 - Express Pull Out Late-Game Win, 8-7
Thanks in large part to left fielder Antonio Serrano, the Pittsburgh Express beat the New York Aces, 8-7. Serrano went 3 for 4 with a double, 2 singles, and a walk. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2. The Express, now 9-17, have not found much traction so far in 1981.

Luis Hard was 2-4 with 2 singles and a walk. He drove in 2 runs against the Aces. With the game tied in the top of the eighth inning, he drew a walk, driving in 1 run that put Pittsburgh in front, 8-7.

"Winning is hard sometimes," said Express manager Mark Averill. "This one was nice to get."

Boston Patriots (14-12) @ Philadelphia Fury (13-13)
Fury Wins Series 2-1
Philly's late inning heroics grab series win.

Here's the skinny: The Philadelphia Fury and Boston Patriots battled in a tightly contested three-game series, with the Fury coming out on top in two of the matchups. In Game 1, despite an outstanding 8-inning shutout performance by Boston's Victor Martinez, Philadelphia snatched a 3-2 victory with Rich Pena's dramatic 3-run homer in the bottom of the ninth. Boston responded in Game 2 with a 5-4 victory, led by Danny Salas' strong offensive performance and a timely pinch-hit RBI single from Jeremy Northway in the seventh inning. The series concluded with another late-inning heroics from the Fury, as Matt Adams pitched a strong game, and Tony Cobb's walk-off double in the ninth inning sealed a 2-1 win for Philadelphia. GAME 1 - Fury Clip Patriots, 3-2
Boston wasted an exceptional performance by pitcher Victor Martinez, falling to the Philadelphia Fury, 3-2. Martinez threw 8.0 innings of shutout ball for the losing team. Oscar Rebeles snagged the win in relief. He goes to 1-1 on the season. Adam Smith suffered the loss. The loss drops the Patriots to 13-11.

Philadelphia got a clutch hit from Rich Pena. The third baseman launched a 3-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the game. It was his only hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a kill shot.

After the game, Philadelphia manager Danny Sanchez applauded the team's effort. "They busted their tails out there," he said.

GAME 2 - Patriots Earn Late Win
The Boston Patriots downed the Philadelphia Fury, 5-4, at Fury Park. The Patriots were led by Danny Salas. Salas was 2-3 with a home run, a double, and a walk, while scoring 3 and driving in 2. Miguel Velasquez, the winner, is now 3-3. He struck out 3 and walked 1 over 8 innings, while allowing 4 runs on 6 hits. Philadelphia falls to 12-13.

Boston used the timely hitting of Jeremy Northway to seize the win. The pinch hitter stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Patriots on top, 3-2. It was his only hit in 2 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"Our goal is to improve each and every day," Northway told the Boston Herald.

GAME 3 - Fury Take Down Patriots, 2-1
Starting pitcher Matt Adams gave the Philadelphia Fury a rock-solid performance, helping his team defeat the Boston Patriots, 2-1, at Fury Park. The win puts Philadelphia at 13-13.

The decisive blow was delivered by Tony Cobb in the bottom of the ninth when he hit a run-scoring double off 33-year old right-handed pitcher Justin Bowen to win the game for Philadelphia. The home crowd went nuts.[<>]

"Matt's not intimidated by who's stepping into the batter's box," said Philadelphia manager Danny Sanchez.

St. Louis Stallions (14-12) @ Houston Mavericks (10-16)
Stallions Win Series 2-1
Alex Lander's clutch hitting leads St. Louis to series win.

Here's the skinny: The Houston Mavericks and St. Louis Stallions faced off in a three-game series that saw the Mavericks take the opener before the Stallions rallied to win the next two games. In Game 1, Houston secured a 9-5 victory, with Felix Alvarez contributing two doubles and two runs, while Alex Ramirez's 2-run homer set the tone early. However, St. Louis responded in Game 2, riding Noah Debrah's strong pitching and Alex Lander's crucial 2-run double to a 3-1 win. The Stallions continued their momentum in Game 3, winning 8-4 as Lander again starred, hitting a home run and driving in four runs. Houston dropped to 10-16, struggling to find consistency, while St. Louis improved their record with a solid all-around performance.

Early in the game, catcher Alex Ramirez had a 2-run home run for Houston. It was his 3rd home run of the season and put the Mavericks on top, 2-0.

St. Louis turned a good performance from starting pitcher Noah Debrah into a 3-1 triumph over the Houston Mavericks at Houston Stadium. Andrew Williamson earned the save for St. Louis, his 6th. The Mavericks fall to 10-15.

St. Louis used a well-timed hit by Alex Lander to capture the win. The designated hitter socked a 2-run double in the top of the third inning to put the Stallions ahead, 2-0. Though it was his only hit in 4 at-bats, it was important.

"What's not to like about a win?" said Debrah.

St. Louis designated hitter Alex Lander was instrumental in helping the Stallions triumph, 8-4, over the Houston Mavericks. Lander was 2 for 4 with a home run. He scored 2 times and drove in 4. Jose Coronado earned the win for St. Louis. He lasted 8.1 innings, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits, while striking out 7. With the win, he raised his record to 3-2. The Mavericks fall to 10-16 and continue their uneven start to the 1981 season.

Lander had an important at-bat with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, when he hit a 2-run single. The Stallions went on to win.[<>]

"Everything is going good for me," said Lander.

Anatomy of a streak: Las Vegas continues to find ways to win.

In Game 1, Bobby Rodriguez pitched eight strong innings to lead Las Vegas to a 5-2 victory, with Jose Charon's 2-run single in the eighth breaking a late tie. The series concluded with a 3-1 win in extra innings, where Jeff Smith's 2-run homer in the 11th inning sealed the victory. Despite strong performances from Seattle's pitchers, the Gamblers' clutch hitting and resilient pitching proved too much for the Comets.

The Gamblers got a clutch hit from second baseman Vinny Lopez. In the bottom of the tenth, he delivered a run-scoring single to win the game for the Gamblers.[<>]

"Oscar just went about his business, throwing strikes," said Las Vegas manager Matt Petrie.

GAME 3 - Gamblers Down Comets, 3-1
The Seattle Comets got a sterling performance from pitcher Antonio Romo, but the Las Vegas Gamblers still prevailed, 3-1. Romo threw 8.0 innings of 2-hit ball. The win was credited to 26-year old right-handed pitcher Derrek Sanders in relief. His record improves to 3-0. Jesse Street took the loss. Early on, the Gamblers, at 21-5, have excelled.

Las Vegas got a knockout punch from Jeff Smith. The third baseman hammered a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 11th inning to win the game. It might've been his only hit, but it decided the outcome.[<>]

"We didn't let this one get away," said Smith.

Denver Rocketeers (13-13) @ Portland Lumberjacks (8-18)
Lumberjacks Win Series 2-1
'Jacks win first series of the season in dramatic fashion.

Here's the skinny: The Portland Lumberjacks and Denver Rocketeers faced off in a tightly contested three-game series, with Portland managing to take two of the three games. In Game 1, Portland secured a 6-3 victory, thanks to Jeremy Campbell's grand slam in the fifth inning that erased a 3-0 deficit and put the Lumberjacks ahead for good. Despite their struggles this season, Portland found a way to win with David Rodriguez delivering a solid 7-inning performance on the mound. Denver bounced back in Game 2 with a 6-5 win, led by Boboy Nierva's 4-RBI effort, including a crucial 2-run homer in the sixth inning. The series finale was a nail-biter, with Portland winning 2-1 on a walk-off single by Mike Hargett in the bottom of the ninth. The Rocketeers, now 13-13, continue their uneven start to the season, while Portland sits at 8-18, still fighting to turn things around.

GAME 1 - Rocketeers Tagged with 6-3 Loss
The Portland Lumberjacks knocked off the Denver Rocketeers, 6-3, in American Baseball Conference action at Portland Grounds. Portland pitcher and Revere, Massachusetts, native David Rodriguez had an outstanding performance. Rodriguez got the win, improving to 2-1. He gave up 6 hits and walked 3 over 7 innings. He allowed 3 runs. Picking up the save was Frank Jahr, his 2nd.

Jeremy Campbell had a big grand slam home run for the Lumberjacks in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Portland trailing 3-0 and the bases loaded, he got a fastball from Damian Serano, who is tied for 7th in the ABC in complete games with 1, and swatted a home run to right. It was his 8th home run of the season, and more importantly, it put the Lumberjacks ahead, 4-3.

"David pounded the strike zone and made good pitches when he needed to," said Portland manager Tim Staheli.

Despite the win, Portland, now 7-17, is off to a terrible start.

GAME 2 - Denver Gets 6-5 Win Against Lumberjacks

The win gives Denver a record of 13-12.

Denver took a 6-2 lead on Nierva's 2nd home run of the season. The 2-run home run, which he hit off Adam Strate in the top of the sixth, propelled Denver to the win.

"It's nice to deliver when your team's counting on you," said Nierva.

GAME 3 - Lumberjacks Score Late to Nip Rocketeers, 2-1
Portland pitcher Paul Johnson had a large part in his team subduing the Denver Rocketeers, 2-1. The opposition could never mount much of a rally against the right-hander. Frank Jahr, credited with the win in relief, is now 2-2. He allowed no runs on no hits in 1 innings. The Rocketeers drop to 13-13 and continue their mediocre start to the 1981 season.

Mike Hargett was the walk-off hero for Portland. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Lumberjacks designated hitter hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home.[<>]

"I just tried to focus on getting that first guy out every inning," said Johnson.
