To change a single player from being a follower:

-right-click on the player's name, select "Set Game Strategy", scroll down on the right, and uncheck the "Use as Follower" box.

To disable openers/followers altogether:

-click on your league's name, click on "Stats & AI", scroll down on the left and from the "Use of Openers" pull-down select "0 (Never)".
