August recap: Division Leaders
Lager League-Pilsner Division: Weyerbacher Blithering Idiot: with solid starting pitching from Gustavo Gutierrez (10-5, 2.90 ERA) and Danny Ibarra (13-4, 2.58 ERA); combined with the offensive input from veterans Mitch Chandler (.306 average 19 home runs, 69 RBIs) and Alex Madrigal (.249 average, 20 home runs, 83 RBIs) has Weyerbacher atop the division with an 8.5 game lead as the season heads down the final stretch.
Lager League-Kolsch Division: Charleville Half Wits: if the Half Wits can take a lead into the late innings, it's all but over as they have two of the most dominant bullpen arms in the league with all-time saves leader Victor Banuelos (20 saves, 0.73 ERA) and up-and-coming youngster Matthew O'Connor (27 saves, 0.86 ERA) giving the team an impressive 1-2 punch to close out games.
Lager League-Helles Division: Sierra Nevada Narwhals: with all-time wins leader Bobby Rodriguez leading the charge (189 career Beer League wins), Sierra Nevada holds a 3 game lead in a tight division, where just 8 games separate 1st from 4th.
Lager League-Tripel Division: Texas Leaguer Chin Music / Daft Badger Hoppypotamus: a three game losing streak to finish the month for Texas Leaguer opened the door for Daft Badger to pull into a tie for the top spot in the division as we head into September. The Chin Music are looking for their 3rd division crown in the last 4 years; while the Hoppypotamus are hoping to claim their first ever division title.
Stout League-Porter Division: Three Floyds Apocalypse Cow: Despite a 5 game losing streak to end the month, Three Floyds still hold an 8 game lead in the division. Youngster Ben Troyer continues to have a career year on the mound with a 16-5 record and 2.19 ERA as he tries to lead his club to a division title
Stout League-Dunkel Division: Jester King Das Wunderkind: another solid month (17-10) for Jester King have them rolling along with the best record in the Beer League and an 8.5 game lead in the division. After a mediocre rookie season last year (30 games, 1 home run, 9 RBIs, .238 average), third baseman Donny Hill is having a breakout year this season, batting an impressive .368 with 14 home runs and 76 RBIs so far.
Stout League-Eisbock Division: Smog City Sabre Toothed Squirrels: solid starting from veteran Clint Willey (12-2, 2.06 ERA) and newcomer Jeff Lange (9-3, 2.30 ERA), as well as the finishing hammer of legendary Beer League pitcher Jim Stamey (41 saves, 1.62 ERA), Smog City is looking for a return trip to the BCS, and hope for a win to finish out the season this time.
Stout League-Altbier Division: Thimble Island Kraken: a quick glance at their overall record of 66-67 would make one do a double take to make sure they saw the standings correctly; but Thimble Island do hold the division lead with a sub-500 record at this point of the season. Only 7.5 games separate 1st from last place in the division, so it's anyone's guess who will finish on top when the dust settles.
