The same kind of randomness happens in the base game. I just refer to it as "mystery stinko" when a player with good ratings puts up godawful numbers, usually for one season before bouncing back. I don't think there's anything to be done about it other than burying him deeper down in the lineup.


Yes, there is random deviation; but the problem is that the all-time greats (excepting the Babe, who had well-documented bad habits) didn't deviate to the extent that everyday players did. Search Aaron, Jackson, and WTH Pete Rose and Al Kaline and Ted Williams. Their career arcs are arcs, with no "mystery stinko" seasons. They were great every year once they established themselves, until age caught up with them.
