If after the end of the season the simulation accuracy is good, then the league as a whole is functioning properly. However within that players can be considerably above or below their actual performances and this is accentuated by using one year ratings.

The reason is a player's performance in a season is some combination of skill and luck. But a player gets rated for his really good season and luck (randomness in the game) works with that as if that rating was based all on skill. The exception is "Real Stats" reduce HR ratings on high outlier performances like Maris' 61 in 61 but not Mantle 54 the same year because Maris' performance is seen by the devs as largely luck while Mantle's is seen as largely skill.

Anyway, be aware that players can occasionally have implausible single year performances. The devs believe in randomness and (except on big HR totals) don't put floors or caps on individual player performance.
