I'm surprised they okayed it so fast.

I reserve the right to change my mind, but at first blush I really don't like this. Sign-stealing has been a part of the game for a long time and it should be. I like that there's a bit of espionage in the game. It makes it interesting. You want to make changes to make the game safer or more interesting, sure, okay. But this makes the game more bland. Keep the spice in the recipe, please!

I get that it's also supposed to speed up the game and I'm good with that aspect of it. I just don't like the other implications of it.

Tonight I watched this video by MLB Network and it struck me as odd how loud it is. Now maybe they did something to make the video's viewers be able to hear it better and maybe in use it's not nearly as loud, but, if it's not audible to batter or runners, I'm thinking you could easily use one of those audio scanners to pick it up and relay it to them. I also thought it was awkward how the catcher has to program it: 1) how easy is it for the batter or someone watching via live video to see what buttons they're pressing, and 2) how easy is it for the catcher to make a mistake, press the wrong button and a pitch ends up going somewhere he's nowhere near close to setting up for? Also, can you re-program it on the fly (button A sends msg Y instead of msg X) if you think someone has caught on to what you're doing (like you easily could do previously)?

So I'm thinking now, maybe it doesn't prevent sign-stealing at all, it just makes you have to do it in different ways. I understand they tested it some previously, but I'm surprised there wasn't more talk about whether it was flat out good for the game or not. Sure, minor leagues aren't going to go through the trouble of trying to crack Pitchcom, but you can bet that MLB teams will.

EDIT: To be clear, even though I saw a bunch of issues with it from MLB Network's video, I'm actually less down on it than I was before because I'm certain now that it doesn't prevent sign-stealing (even Harold said it doesn't). They can say it does all they want, but it won't. If anything, I think it will actually make it easier. Audio scanning technology has been around a very long time and I'm sure it's far better now. What it should do though is speed up the game and, again, I'm good with that.
