A lot of even hardcore NBA fans do not realize that the Hawks are one of the oldest franchises in the NBA. Going back to 1946

A lot of that is because they’ve moved around a lot. It’s pretty similar to I think how people think of the Oakland A’s and the Minnesota Twins - less founding members of the AL, more expansion targets of the 60s. Or for that matter the Arizona Cardinals, formerly the St. Louis Cardinals and formerly formerly the Chicago Cardinals.
