The way it
could be manageable might be...
1. Dependent upon the number of all-time teams for which you're willing to manually make historical transactions, and/or...
2. If you limit the transactions to the ones that are significant. IOW, using your '88 Dodgers as the example, the trade of Pedro Guerrero the Cards for John Tudor is significant. The trading away of Bill Krueger to the Pirates (for future 12-game major-leaguer Jim Niedlinger) is probably not significant. And the trading of Shawn Hillegas to the White Sox in exchange for Ricky Horton, may or may not be significant, depending upon your definition of
significant
So if you have a 16-greatest-team league, you might be needing to make somewhere along the lines of 20-40 manual moves. Personally, I'd be cool with that. YMMV, though. Good luck, if you decide to try it!
