After a rough start to the season (10-18 after April), Waffletown fans were expecting one of those dismal seasons where they struggle against relegation. The team made a complete turnaround in May (20-8) and kept the solid play up for most of the remaining season. When the dust settled, the champagne corks were flying in the clubhouse for the 23rd time in team history and 4th consecutive time as the Syrups claimed the top wild card spot.
"We weren't worried with the slow start..." said long-time catcher Ernie Lombardi. "...we've been through a lot together, so we know what this club is capable of. Now we just need to get over that last hump and bring home a Perfect tier title."
Waffletown will host the Mizzou YakAnglers in the wild card match. The two teams met seven times during the regular season, with Mizzou winning the series 4 games to 3.
