I thought it was one of those unfortunate unintended bad timing issues. It certainly wasn't one of those racist dog whistles. In fact, if Darling had taken a moment to keep himself from saying "chink" because of Tanaka, wouldn't that mean he thought of Asians that way? Chink in the armor is an expression w/zero intent to be racist. If the saying has a racist background, it has long since been forgotten.

"Chink" was used to describe a crack or gap since the 1400's.

"Chink" as a slur didn't start til 4 centuries later.

But as I said in the Wahoo thread, if it offends, just apologize & try not to use it again publicly like that. I think Darling did the right thing. If anyone wanted to make a big deal out of it later, then they are the ones with the problem.
