There are also intermediate things you can do. For instance, since most of the important decisions you have to make as a manager come late in the game one thing I and a lot of other OOTPers do / have done in the past is sim to the 7th inning and then take over. You still get to handle relief pitching and pinch-hitters, if the game's a blowout you can just sim through anyway, and IME it's one of those things that really, really helps you get immersed into a fictional league.
