I suppose it is more "flexible" now, or as had been said is a lot more need-based rather than based on divisional alignment. A couple of trades that come to mind are the Red Sox trading Andrew Miller to the Orioles. The Orioles needed a left-handed reliever, and they paid a premium with one of their own top prospects going to the Red Sox. Also, to a lesser extent, Stephen Drew traded to the Yankees for Kelly Johnson. Obviously, neither team made the playoffs, so that's a little different.
