It probably wasn't freezing anyway. When the update is very large, ootp sometimes stops reporting progress on the progress bar when in fact its still downloading.
You should get an online monitor which shows online activity. Then you'll know if stuff is actually still downloading. Bitmeter II or Bistmeter OS are good free ones. (Thank You Ware).

Then again it's also a very good idea NOT to include images, so your solution to a possible non-issue is a good one nonetheless.
