Paul, I just tried a tactic which I think will be helpful. I formatted my hard drive and then re-installed Mac OS X 10.5 fresh. (Time Machine's great for backups!) I applied the combo patch to 10.5.3, rebooted, and then installed OOTP9 to a custom location. In my case, it was /Volumes/Data/OOTP9. I checked the Console to see what the system log had to say. After the installation, it said this:

6/29/08 10:00:54 AM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.UserEventAgent-LoginWindow[96]) Exited: Terminated
6/29/08 10:02:57 AM [0x0-0x12012].com.yourcompany.installer_macos[214] chmod: /OOTP9/OOTP9.app/Contents/MacOS/OOTP9: No such file or directory
6/29/08 10:02:58 AM [0x0-0x12012].com.yourcompany.installer_macos[214] chmod: /OOTP9/OOTP9.app/Contents/MacOS/OOTP9: No such file or directory
6/29/08 10:02:58 AM [0x0-0x12012].com.yourcompany.installer_macos[214] chmod: /OOTP9/OOTP9.app/Contents/Resources/main.nib/classes.nib: No such file or directory
6/29/08 10:02:58 AM [0x0-0x12012].com.yourcompany.installer_macos[214] chmod: /OOTP9/OOTP9.app/Contents/Resources/main.nib/info.nib: No such file or directory
6/29/08 10:02:58 AM [0x0-0x12012].com.yourcompany.installer_macos[214] chmod: /OOTP9/OOTP9.app/Contents/Resources/main.nib/objects.xib: No such file or directory
6/29/08 10:02:58 AM [0x0-0x12012].com.yourcompany.installer_macos[214] chmod: /OOTP9/OOTP9.app/Contents/Resources/EWSMacCompress.tar.gz: No such file or directory
6/29/08 10:02:58 AM [0x0-0x12012].com.yourcompany.installer_macos[214] chmod: /OOTP9/OOTP9.app/Contents/Resources/Info.plist: No such file or directory
6/29/08 10:02:58 AM [0x0-0x12012].com.yourcompany.installer_macos[214] chmod: /OOTP9/OOTP9.app/Contents/Resources/InfoPlist.strings: No such file or directory
6/29/08 10:02:58 AM [0x0-0x12012].com.yourcompany.installer_macos[214] chmod: /OOTP9/OOTP9.app/Contents/Resources/OOTP9.icns: No such file or directory
6/29/08 10:02:58 AM [0x0-0x12012].com.yourcompany.installer_macos[214] chmod: /OOTP9/OOTP9.app/Contents/Info.plist: No such file or directory
6/29/08 10:02:58 AM [0x0-0x12012].com.yourcompany.installer_macos[214] chmod: /OOTP9/OOTP9.app/Contents/PkgInfo: No such file or directory

So it seems like the installer never gets the chance to run the chmods that it needs to. After I looked at this, I checked the permissions of the OOTP9 file that you had me change the permissions on earlier. As one might think, they were set wrong. I ran chmod +x on the file and loaded OOTP9. My results were the same as before. I first got the error about Esellerate not being able to be loaded. Then I got the font error. So I can safely say that even on a fresh install of 10.5.3, OOTP cannot be installed to a custom location.
