If Jesus Horne fought nobody but Roderick "Playboy" Johnston, we imagine he'd be the 5 Boroughs ringholder by now. Of course, Johnston hasn't held the ring himself so that would be pretty hard. We were and still are skeptical of Horne's ability to last 10 rounds against somebody with proven punching power; Horne seems to open up a gash above his eye every single fight and this has led him to go for broke in the middle rounds of even some of his shorter fights. Having the ability to knock an opponent out is great; having to resort to that strategy because otherwise you're going to have the match called on cuts isn't. Even when he does win that way, he's got to tend to his wounds for a month and thus could miss out on fighting opportunities.
In other news, the New York region just got a little bigger as Nicholas Gregory announced he was moving up. He provides the 5 Boroughs with the kind of winning boxer it has missed since the suspension of Laffy Jaffe. Speaking of promotions, we're waiting with pleasure for Canadians Alexis Beaudoin and Norris Hetu to tell good old Frank that they'll be moving up to the Canadian regionals. When that happens, we expect that they'll retire to a second gym and hold matches there. We don't know for sure, but based on our knowledge of the people to the north, it will probably be owned by someone named "Guy" who pronounces his name "Gee" and who gets very angry when you say his name wrong. Don't say you weren't warned.
Notes: All was not well for Alexis Beaudoin, as it turns out that he broke his hand on Vladimir "Vodka" Drunkenski's face and will miss a couple months. Norris Hetu also bowed out for the next few months. He's following in his fellow Canadians' footsteps and taking up logging for a while. While we hear that it's great for the arms, it also provides them with a second source of income. Okay, that's actually a good thing on a personal level but it also means that he's liable to be less hungry. Let's hope he's still "got it" when he comes back.
Following his victory against future tomato can Allen Briggs, David Sams decided that boxing was not the life for him and announced his retirement. Well, forget you as well, Mister Sams!

Date Winner W-L-D K Loser W-L-D K Venue Group Significance Matchup Result
2/8/1867 Milton Harris 0-0-1 Allen Polito 2-1-1 Frank's Beginners B A Dr
Polito's last bout was in September, and it showed.
2/8/1867 Robert Baynham 2-3-0 Bear Hugger 0-2-0 Frank's Beginners C C UD
Baynham needed this victory. Hugger needs some sort of full-body razor.
2/8/1867 Cap'n Jack 3-0-0 2 Joe Miles 0-5-0 Frank's Beginners D F TKO3
Throughout the fight, Miles had "a little Captain in him"; specifically, Captain's fists were embedded in his jaw.
2/8/1867 Thomas McConkey 2-5-0 Mike Butler 2-6-1 1 Frank's New York C- C MD
Butler was all over McConkey in rounds 7 and 8; the question is, why didn't he fight like that sooner?
2/22/1867 David Sams 3-1-0 2 Alan Briggs 1-4-1 1 Frank's Beginners D D UD
Sams literally wiped the floor with Briggs. Okay, fine... they literally had to mop the floor after they were done.
2/22/1867 Alexis Beaudoin 3-0-0 2 Vodka Drunkenski 0-1-0 Frank's Beginners B C UD
Maybe Beaudoin isn't such a soft puncher after all: 2 knockdowns in his first 3 fights.
2/22/1867 Norris Hetu 2-1-0 1 Tony Wilson 6-2-0 2 Frank's Beginners C B KO2
Hetu put Wilson to the canvas twice in the 2nd. What is this world coming to, when Canadians can do that to the USA?
2/22/1867 Manuel Roettgen 3-1-0 2 Don Flamenco 1-2-0 Frank's Beginners C D UD
Roettgen's punches slide off Flamenco's slick hair, preventing knockdown.
2/22/1867 Nicholas Gregory 6-1-0 1 Jacques Cantin 1-5-0 Frank's Beginners D D KO6
The first KO of Gregory's career moves him into the New York Regionals. Good luck, Nicky Two Punches!
2/22/1867 Jesus Horne 6-3-0 2 Rod Johnston 6-5-0 Frank's New York B+ B+ TKO8
Horne finally answers critics who say he can't do anything but get cut. Incidentally, he got cut in this fight, too.
