You have to read a while to realize that he's calling for the Yanks to let him go at the end of 2007. Read that as, "Don't offer A-Rod a mint to stay because he is going to opt out of his contract in order to cash in on this great season that he is having, and since we have not won anything with him around that's proof we don't need him, so good riddance, let's spend the money on someone else." That is the essence, I think.
BTW, don't let the reference to "Charlie Boggs" throw you; he's referring to Charlie Hayes and Wade Boggs sharing 3B in 1996. That had me going to B-R to check on Boggs' middle name or nickname - the "two headed monster" reference went over my head.
