I tried importing every individual season of Bud Fowler into an 1877 start. It definitely seems like 1884 Bud Fowler is overtuned. 17 3B and 27 2B in only 323 AB makes him perhaps the best gap hitter...

I wonder if the source of the issue here is that Fowler is being incorrectly identified as having played in a negro league? Like maybe the code looks for players...

Joe Blong (blongjo01) is listed in-game as having 11 earned runs as a pitcher in 1875, for an ERA of 0.77. But baseball reference reports a much more realistic 44 runs and 3.07 ERA.

There is a player from 1872 with last name Spencer whose first name is unknown, but the game records his first name as "NULL", presumably from an old database import issue. His id is spenc01.
