I got it to work!

I deleted the version I had, and re-downloaded it off the website. Not sure what the problem was, but, it works beautifully now.

I've left everything as completely default except the entry draft, and year to 2000.

There is a toggle in the setup screen when you create a new historical game that allows you to turn on, or off players retiring in the actual year they retired. I have not tested it to see verify it...
