We "Oughts" to Have a Tournament

Decided that now was as good of time as any to run a tournament.
Featuring every MLB team from the "Oughts" (2000 to 2009), we shall see which team from that decade comes out on top. I'll quick play most games until we get to the Final Four or so.

Since that decade has 300 different teams and to fit them into a tournament bracket of 256 remaining teams, I realized I needed some type of a play-in round. Decided to take the eight worst teams from each season plus the next eight worst teams to make up those 44 head-to-head matchups. Five MLB teams escaped the play-in round for that decade - the Angels, Athletics, Cardinals, Red Sox and Yankees will have ten shots at the title for the decade.
Not surprisingly, the Orioles, Pirates, Rays and Royals have the biggest number of entries in the play-in round.

All match-ups in the tournament will be randomly generated, except that the playoff teams in the decade will not be able to match up in the Round of 256.
I'll be using the Historical Exhibition setup in OOTP22 to run each match-up as a stand-alone seven game series.

Other items of note:
  • Home team is random during the play-in round, better team gets home field advantage in later rounds
  • Game era and strategy is random during the play-in round, better team gets game era in later rounds
  • DH being used and injuries are off
  • Home/away format is 2/2/1/1/1
  • Opening day rosters are utilized

At this point, about half (20) of the play-in round matchups have been completed. Not many highlights to date of note, except for the following:
  • The very first series (2009 Pirates at 2005 Devil Rays) featured the only series MVP from the losing team to date (LF Carl Crawford .423/.433/.692 1 HR 7 RBI)
  • Speaking of the Devil Rays, they have lost all five series they have participated in to date
  • Only one matchup of the same team against themselves (Brewers, with the 2001 squad taking out the 2002 squad)
  • Best pitching performance was a one-hitter by 2005 Los Angeles Dodger Jeff Weaver (over the 2003 Detroit Tigers)
  • So far, no pitcher has won the series MVP

Will continue to post updates to this thread as the tournament progresses.

The completion of the play-in rounds had more of the same from the first 20 series that was in the original post:
  • Two series featured MVPs from the losing team
  • Two series featured highlight was a bench clearing brawl
  • 2007 San Francisco Giant SP Matt Cain threw a 1-hit SO in G1, but his team lost the only series to a Tampa Bay Devil Ray team during the play-in round (TBR lost 7 of 8 series)
  • Still no MVP from a pitcher
  • Still no sweep from a team
  • 2000 Minnesota Twins went down 3-0 and were down 9-8 in B9, two outs, no one on in G4 of the series - yup, they came back to win in seven

However, the Round 1 series got off to a March Madness type of start. Series #2 featured the 2000 St. Louis Cardinals (95-67) hosting the 2006 Washington Nationals (71-91).
The play-in winning Nats not only continued their winning ways they took out the first playoff team, 4 games to 2. The Nats survived two SPs with ERAs above 6 and rode MVP Alfonso Soriano to the series win.

Two more series played this evening, with the 2000 Atlanta Braves dispatching of the 2005 Pittsburgh Pirates in the first series sweep of the tournament. Pirates got no redemption for Sid Bream in this match-up.

Four more series played today to finish off all of the 2000 MLB playoff teams, with results having all four playoff teams advancing. Tomorrow, will see the 2001 MLB playoff teams getting their first action in Round 1 match-ups.

The eight series featuring the 2001 playoff teams were not elite by any means, as a number of teams "St. Peter'd" their way into the 2nd round by knocking out those playoff teams.

First to lose were the 2001 New York Yankees, who despite 5 HRs and a .533 BA from Derek Jeter, in seven during Round 1. Even worse was that they lost to the 2006 Boston Red Sox, with a Curt Schilling pitching well but without any bloody sock showing up.

After the 2001 Houstron Astros displaced a scrappy 2008 Washington Nationals team 4-2, the Curt Flood-gates opened. Four straight 2001 playoff teams got dumped, starting with the Cardinals (who at least lost at the hands of the 2007 Cardinals squad). The 2001 WS winning Diamondbacks suffered the same fate of the Yankees they defeated, losing not to a bitter rival but becoming the first WS champ to get dumped and to add insult to injury, losing to the play-in series winning 2000 Montreal Expos.

The 2001 Cleveland Indians and Atlanta Braves managed to fall as well, showing that the real life struggles of those clubs carried over into this OOTP Make Believe land.

Through 16 series featuring the 2000 and 2001 playoff teams, those playoff teams went 10-6. Next up will be the 2002 playoff teams tomorrow.
