Post GForce/Rolen Roster Project Update: 4/5

Hey guys,

ok, here's the deal.

Rolen has been slowed down by schoolwork and, more importantly, his new daughter, which I think we can all agree is more important. This isn't so big a deal, as we couldn't really move ahead until I had everybody rated for the "performance stats" (to use a High Heat term). I have also been slowed a little bit by work and the attention I need to pay to my pending wedding and house purchase, not to mention my fiance.

The good news: I have only 4 teams left to enter stats for. I have R/L splits for virtually all major leaguers and a large majority of AAA players. So the info gathering is almost complete as is the data entry as it pertains to these figures.
I have updated transactions to opening day, though I haven't fixed guys to the appropriate levels and lineups yet. The remaining stuff that needs entering are:
Birthdays
Uniform #'s for ML guys
Intangible ratings (loyalty, etc.)
Steal, bunt ratings
Minor ratings tweaking
Award histories (quick job...will include Cy Young, MVP, Rookie of The Year...maybe more eventually)
Pitch types (I have these in a separate spreadsheet I just need to merge it)

The bad news: For simplicity purposes, we have entered everything into spreadsheet format to import via Pierre's editor, since he said that feature would be included this year. I have NO idea when Pierre will release his editor and, basically, we can't import our data without it.

My tentative (hopeful) date of the 15th is not going to be hit, though I still anticipate it being this month. There are just a lot of variables, some in our control, some not. We're close, but to get it the way we will really be PROUD to release it, we need probably 2 weeks. I'd love to say April 22, but it depends on Pierre's editor. That's kind of unfair to him, but it's the situation. Because of how cumbersome oOTP's in-game editor is, entering 3,500 guys (that's roughly how many will be in the set) would take us until June.

I will continue to keep everyone posted as much as I know. I have an e-mail in to Pierre, so when he gets back to me, I'll let everyone know.

Take care and thanks for the interest and support. I PROMISE you we will make this worth your wait.

Boy! You guys really need to get your priorities straightened out. Silly little life issues like these coming before OOTP? Shame on you!

Congratulations to both of you, and thanks for all the work you do for the OOTP community.

I imagine you guys want to make this a two man operation only, and if so, that's cool with me.

However, if you need someone to do some grunt work, don't hesitate to ask...anything I can do to get these out more accurate and quickly would be my pleasure to help with.

Holy smokes, 3500 guys?! I'm new to OOTP, and even newer to "roster sets", but this sounds like you guys are planning on having full minor league systems, eh? I can only imagine how many hours have been put into your efforts so far!
Thank you so much for the effort, and I'm sure we'll all be blown away by the quality of this roster set when it is released. I can't wait!

Wow 4 teams left! with all the things going on in yours, and Rolen's life. I'm surprised you guys got this far so fast. No doubt it will be worth the wait when you guys are finished.

So with the latest announcement of Pierre's editor not being released for maybe 3 months will this set the roster set that long until he's done with the editor?? GForce/Rolen if you need ANY HELP what so ever feel free to ask... I'll take on any task you may need to get this set out ASAP!!

Thanks for your support

Again, I REALLY don't want anything to sound like blame on Pierre, the guy has been nothing but accommodating. But entering more than 3,000 guys by hand is a hell of a lot of work with the in-game editor. I've been in touch with Steve and Markus about another possible way to import these but I don't know yet. Because of the player portion of Pierre's editor not being done yet, we couldn't even do give 30 guys one team each and enter them then merge them together. I have three teams to do still, then Rolen and I will do the aforementioned added stuff and see what happens from there. I just feel bad because a) we really wanted to get this out ASAP, and b) the way we're doing this really leans somewhat unfairly on Pierre and that was not the intent.
Let us wrap up all our data, get that straightened out, and hopefully by then we'll have a better idea of how long it will be.

We appreciate the understanding and support. And I stand by what I said that we will make this worth whatever wait it takes.

Take care,

GH

Of course, if there was a kamikaze fan out there, they could take GForce's spreadsheets and manually input them.

ZMan - I have actually considering offering such help, simply because right now I don't play much OOTP4 because I am waiting for these rosters. With that being said I would think it would take an hour or two a team. That being said I would be looking at 30-60 hours of work plus my actual work. Now I am thinking as I go, Monday I would only have 1 hour available, Tuesday I could put in 2 hours, Wednesday 1 hour, Thursday and Friday 2. Saturday and Sunday probably 3-4 a piece.

I would be looking at putting in 14-16 hours a week for at least 3 weeks like 4 or 5. Knowing my luck Pierre's Editor would come out after 3.

I wander if there is a way to get a group of people together to do 2 or 3 teams a piece. I would think there would be a way.

But then the matters comes down to GForce/Rolen accepting the help, I know I offered some help in the past - actually 2 times. One time I was offered work the other nothing.

Anyways I am sure there would be people willing to do such a task.

I don't understand how exactly the logistics would work with such data entry, but I imagine that one person would have to do 2-3 teams, then pass it on, then they pass it on, etc.... such an effort would have to be damn well coordinated. Therein lies a pitfall.

Another pitfall lies in the accuracy of the input. Such long hours of mindless data entry could lead to some big mistakes. You'd have to have a group of people checking the rosters for quality control too. And to make sure nobody is "tweaking" GForce's ratings without consultation. An honor system would be functional, I'd hope.

All that said, the idea is so crazy, it might just work. Though I'd wish there were an easier way than raw data entry..

If people did 2 teams each, how would you get them together into one file? As far as I know, there is no way to do that.
That and also you run the risk of people changing ratings and such, and I have found in the past that too many cooks on something like this is not a good thing. Just a lot of problems come up. Believe me, we appreciate the support and the offers, and it's something to consider if it is feasible, but I hope you understand the reasoning on our end.
I need to talk to Rolen anyway and see where to head, but I am also talking with Pierre about a way to get this sped up. He's been very receptive so we'll be talking during the next few days and we'll see what we can do.

Thanks again for the interest.

I think you can import teams from one league to another but I am not 100% sure. Anyways like you said it would be very hard to pull off and probably would take 3+ weeks again.

There is no importer for teams from one roster to another as of this time. That was something that Pierre had in his previous editor for OOTP3 but I do not believe that it works for OOTP4.

Yes it takes a lot of time to input them, granted when I did the OOTP3 rosters I was creating the ratings as I created the players so this will not take the 4 1/2 months that that roster file took but it will still take a lot of time to do. Don't worry though, my life is starting to settle down a little bit and I will be jumping into this a bit more, I had basically vegged on it for awhile while Gregg did his part and we waited for the editor. Now that I know the editor will be a longer wait than anticipated it is time for me to jump in and get back to work.

Also I do have one thing to say about the editor, do not put any of the blame for this on Pierre, he is working on his add-on as we are, we can do this without it or with it. The file will get done and it will be worth the wait.

Gregg I will be on-line at times tonight, I have a presentation in my class tomorrow that I have to get done but I am sure that I can squeeze a bit of time in tonight to chat while I am doing that. Talk to you then.

Indeed, those points clarify what I was thinking regarding complications with the entry by hand. Well, I can be patient and wait for the editor...

Is there any possibility that Markus can add some kind of import feature into OOTP?

I e-mailed Markus about that possibility and haven't heard back from him yet.

Anyways if you need any help collecting the following let me know:

Birthdays
Uniform #'s for ML guys
Intangible ratings (loyalty, etc.)
Steal, bunt ratings
Minor ratings tweaking
Award histories
Pitch types
Velocity?

By the way I really have no favorite team, while I like the Reds I realize they are terrible. So you don't have to worry about partial ratings on my part

I may be mistaken, but I don't think career stats can be (easily) edited in the game.

IMO we are best off abandoning that sinking ship that is Off Topic to the rats infesting it and just starting a whole new Baseball Forum from scratch.
