True Commissioners
I recently applied to what looked like a very good league and was denied. The Commissioner said in my rejection e-mail he was thinking of stepping down as the owner of his team in the near future and would consider me to take over his team if this happens. That got me thinking. How many Online Leagues have non owner Commissioners? It would appear to be a great idea. The conflict of interest aspect would be virtually non-existent. I obviously realize the appeal to being an owner, but the owner/Commissioner did not work in MLB. I think mfitter and Bud Selig have something in common. I would love to be a part of a league in which the Commissioner only cares about the integrity of the league and not the competitiveness of his team. Does this type of league exist?

As the commish of Future League Baseball (check sig) , I won't own a team. I'm not even ready to ask for owners yet, but I'm looking forward to starting the league.

My guess is that less than 10% of online leagues feature a Commissioner who does not run a team. Probably closer to 5%.
I have always preferred to join leagues where the Commissioner does have a team. I was always afraid the Commissioner who has no team might be more likely to lose interest in the league and run it with less passion as time went on. Mind you, I have no data to back that up and I could be flat out wrong. Just my theory. Seeing as that I have only joined leagues run by some of the most upstanding Commissioners in the community, guys like Shane Orr, Mark Cooley, and three-headed monster that once ran 4CBA, I have no reason to worry about the type of situations you mentioned from that mfitterer1/BigWillis debacle.

In the TLB, the 2 people who run sims own a team. However, I remained as a co-commish, even though I gave up ownership of my Yankees, so I suppose we have a mixture of both
![]() I've been running leagues since 1999, and this is the first time I've not owned a team. It's just something I never really considered.

I also have to agree with LL. I prefer to join leagues where the Commissioners have an investment in the league other than entertaining us. Most people are not selfless enough to devote themselves to the task of running a league without having some potential for benefit, such as running a team in a league the way they want a league to be run. That being said, I have been a part of the Summer of '49 since the beginning and our beloved Commissioner there, Nathan Corzine has been nothing but devoted to the league without owning a team. So, it is possible to find a great league where a commissioner doesn't own a team. But as a general rule, I think commissioners like to run teams in the leagues they create and aside from a bad apple or two, they are all stand up guys who put the interests of the league first. |

I would give up my team if I could find a decent GM, but it is hard to find active solid GMs to fill every team. I would give up my team for a real good GM if the rest of the GMs were active as well, but otherwise it makes no sense.

Thanks for the kind words Legend. I have often considered stepping down from team ownership in Maelstrom to focus on other aspects of the league, but ownership doesn't really take up a significant amount of time anyway. The only way that I would ever do it now is if there was a very solid owner to come in to take my place and if I felt that I could use the time saved to make the league better.

The FOBL commish is Canadian, so we don't really worry about him being dis-honest

The DDB has a full-time commish. If you're at all familiar with the league than you know that he's as dedicated as they come, and has created a world beyond the normal OOTP universe which keeps him interested, including outside the game ratings which affect what happens in the game. I can't imagine him ever getting bored of the league, although he may eventually find he doesn't have the time. When that day comes, I'll be happy I was a part of one of the most unique leagues I've seen on these boards.
