How important is it to make sure a player gets
his performed jersey number

I notice some star players have low stats compared to their real stats
and i notice some do don't have their preferred jersey number

is their a correlation

You can see on each player card what is affecting their morale positively and negatively, I've only ever noticed a minor morale hit for players (that care about not getting their) number. Some aren't phased by it at all but I would suspect it's very unlikely to have a major impact on performance overall. That's just what I've experienced from playing though.
