Out of Position Players
One more question for you all. Really I need your advice. In my league, the Colorado GM made a trade an aquired Carlos Delgado. He already had Helton to play 1B, so he placed Delgado at 3B in his lineup. This has upset a few of the more experienced members in my league. (My league is a Rookie League, most of the owners, including myself, are first time OOTP online players - It is a learning experience for all of us).
My question is how do I handle this situation? Can an owner play any player at any position and reap the benefits of having Delgado and Helton both in their lineup? Does playing Delgado out of position give Colorado enough defensive problems that it outweighs any benefit of playing him there and he will want to stop? How do other leagues handle this situation? Is it possible for players to learn other positions? Thanks again! Jim |

yeah...after a number of games...don't know the exact number, but at least 30 or more i think, he will proably learn the possition at a range/% depending on his other possition ratings...

It really depends on the league and on your idea of your league. Most leagues I've looked at handle it in the rules. They either say players can only play at positions for which they are rated, or they may say that position players can play in any "like" position (IF or OF, for example).
It's up to you as to the philosophy your league takes on. If you want a more realistic historic league, then you may not want owners using players out of position. The key, though, is to handle it, don't just ignore it. Make a decision or take a league vote, if you like, and make your decision public (to your league, that is). I'd recommend being careful about changing rules in mid-season because of some complaints, though - unless it's a major issue. That can lead to serious headaches for you. Especially if in this case you don't have any rules regarding this and the owner hasn't done anything wrong based on your current rule set or done anything to go against the "spirit" in which the league is setup. More experienced OOTP owners may be complaining because other leagues they are in have rules regarding this. They really should have paid closer attention to your rules before joining or made suggestions about them prior to the start of the season. It is a very common occurence. Whatever you decide to do, remember, most owners only complain about a rule if it goes against their team - just like IRL.

I think all of the pitchers are going to demand to be traded.

I would agree with adventureran on this one. If there is currently no rule preventing 1B from playing 3B, then there's not much you can do about it. I would suggest adding an amendment to your league's rulebook or constitution preventing it from happening again if the majority of the league is against it. I also strongly agree with ar about waiting until the off-season - never change a rule in mid-season.
That said, a lot of leagues I've seen allow players to play at like positions whether they're rated or not (ie, 1B & 3B, 2B & SS), so under similar rules, this case would not have been effected. Last edited by Hammer755; 05-27-2003 at 09:07 AM. |

Sure the offense is nice, but the Defense will kill you more times then not. The real issue is, how many other players in your league have played a new position and since they were not as high profile as Delgado, no one ever knew about it?

You'll find that there are a lot of online league rules out there that have come as a result of people taking advantage of loopholes or inadequacies in the OOTP system. If you browse around some leagues, you may find a few that you want to implement before they become a problem. As others have said though, it really depends on your vision for the league.

is it just me?
Is it just me or if the Yankees played Jason Giambi at 3b the whole league would love it. In my opinon, a manager's purpose is to do what he feels is best for his team. Like the GM that is talked about I have both Jason Giambi and Todd Helton, I played Helton at third. Helton played average at 3rd not kjilling me while him and Giambi both hit over 300 had 25 HR's and drove in combined 250. If this backfired then the NL West would have loved it. That's just my opinion though.
