The Big Red Machine

Hello Guys,

I this historical replay I am trying the replicate the success of the Big Red Machine. I started in 1963 which was the rookie year of Pete Rose.

My main settings are as follows.

* Full minor leagues.
* Coaching and development on with 3-year recalc.
* Morale and personality off.
* League development on.
* Expanded roster off.
* Financials on, reserve clause-era rules on.
* Draft off, historical rookies to their original teams.

In the 1963 season we finshed 6th place in the NL with 85 wins and 12 GB the pennant winner (Dodgers).

In 1964 we came in 4th with 93 wins 4 GB the pennant winner (Dodgers).

In 1965 we finished 3rd with 91 wins 7 GB the pennant winner (Dodgers).

As a side note the Dodgers lost all three finals; in 1963 to the White Sox, in 1964 to the Tigers, and in 1965 to the Orioles.

We have been struggling with the inconsistency of our starting rotation in the past three seasons, while our bullpen was always among the best bullpens in the league. By the end of 1965 I almost completely overhauled the rotation, only Jim Maloney remained. Preparing for the 1966 campagin we have have Bob Gibson, Jim Maloney, Ken Johnson, Gary Nolan and Mike Cuellar as the starting five, while in the bullpen we have Phil Niekro, Bill Henry, Ron Perranoski, Lindy McDaniel and Don McMahon.

However right now I have a dilemma. It looks that I can trade Jim Maloney to the Giants for Gaylord Perry. If I look at strictly history and historical stats both were great pitchers, but Perry had a much longer career in MLB.

So I would appreciate if you can share your experience with historical replays. I mean if a player retired IRL 1971, how the 3-year recalc will work in game? Even if he did not retire in game, but no stats available from 1972,73, 74 etc. his ratings will eventually decline and sooner or later will also retire in game?

By the end of the 1965 season we managed to build the best farm system in MLB

that is why historical replays, to me, are not as fun career wise. You basically know the outcome and who develops.

I don’t play straight historical anymore but when I did, I played the early years. I was aware of some of the star players from that era but not familiar with a lot of the good players. When a player had a very good year in my league, I would look up their biographies and learned a lot more about the early years.
