FHM9 QoL Ideas

Below are a few observations and accompanying suggestions for your consideration as you hunker down and start your efforts on FHM9.

Currently when viewing a game in the 2D mode and with the No Highlights & Show Stats options both selected, you are able to in this fashion simultaneously view both teams’ rosters & respective stats all up-dated in game time, as well as seeing which players are then on the ice via them being slightly highlighted as the play progresses. (Although it should be pointed out that currently with this particular set-up, the text description at the bottom of the screen as to what is happening on the ice does not show up, which I believe should be corrected).

However, I feel it would be immensely more helpful & engaging if this could be expanded to present this same detail, but in the following fashion instead.

Instead of the current method of player highlighting which is at least for me, a bit difficult to pick out & follow in real time, rather use the currently available screen space between the two teams’ stats boxes to extract from the stats box and show those players from each team that are currently on the ice and their individual game stats line (GR / OGR / DGR) and possibly also shift / game fatigue ratings beneath each player, if not too cluttered, with this all still being up-dated in game time. But with it now presented in a more appropriate head-to-head visual fashion and thus easier to zero in on and assimilate for the player.

This in my opinion would allow you to as a coach to more easily see both the actual line combinations & head-to-head matches that are then happening on the ice, but also subsequently afford you the opportunity adjust your tactics / line formations etc. if & as required. (For example, if you are seeing your 2nd line LW frequently getting spanked by their 2nd line RD, you could mix up your lines and/or individual players to try adjust).

Add to this, the ability to via assigned hotkeys to simply & easily change your FWD lines & DEF pairings to send out on the ice at play stoppages and I feel you will have increased the players engagement in both following what’s actually happening on the ice, but also the potential to now engage more fully in certain of the tactical aspects of the game.

Another feature that would be nice to see potentially added with respect to viewing the game in this fashion, again with the aim of increasing the players engagement and tactical decision making, would be to also show each teams tactical settings for the formation currently on the ice as the play moves from zone-to-zone. Which the player could then potentially adjust for between periods.

And in another QoL adjustment, if each players assigned position (LW-C-RW-LD-RD) could also be included beside each player’s number in their team’s stat box, that would also be somewhat helpful in evaluating player / line performance. But better still, instead of the current method of simply listing players in order of their jersey number in the stat box, show them instead grouped by their respective lines (i.e., Line 1 - LW-C-RW & LD-RD, Line 2 etc.) with a spacing between each formation to help better visually separate them from within the current mass of stat numbers that are on screen.

One thing I would like to see as a QoL item would be the ability to invite all of your contracted players at once to training camp with one click of a button, as opposed to having to call them up one by one. I like that the coach will utilize most of the players in a similar fashion a coach would IRL, but the process of having to call up every single player one by one is cumbersome.
In the same vein, I'd like for the AI to also come to camp with more than 25-26 players, thus pretty much always having their best possible lineups.

With regards to filters. A nice feature to see added would be when viewing all the various stats & ratings available via the Info drop down menu on the roster screen, would be the ability to also see those same stats / ratings presented as a unique grouping that would correspond to a selected forward line and / or defensive pairing.

So as an example, in addition to having the option to view via the filter setting all my current roster Left Wingers as a single grouping for comparison purposes, I could also choose to only view either my 1st or 2nd or 3rd etc line players (LW – C – RW) as a single grouping to evaluate their stats / ratings as a formation and vis a vis each other within that particular grouping. Ditto of course for each of the respective defensive pairings and PP / PK formations as well.

Also related to QoL filter suggestions, I have mentioned this before, but the maximum age counter does not need to go up to 999 as it currently does. Perhaps setting the max. at 50 would suffice and thus making the function of the counter adjustment somewhat more practical to use when looking for a player with a maximum age of 24 for example.

And again, with respect to filters QoL, would it be possible to create a lock for your filter settings so they don’t always revert back to their initial setting when changing screens.

One QoL I would like is to have the ability to set Lines from Line-ups and vice versa. I understand why there are two different ways to pick the team, but I think it would help once you have selected your lines that you could transfer that straight to the line-up screen. (The AI select, iirc, will pick its own preference on both screens)

A couple of suggestions:

When shopping a player you receive multiple messages that you have to scroll through to see which is the best offer. Instead, just have one summary message (or screen) that compiles and sorts all the offers, so you can quickly see which is the best one available.

For testing mods - from the start-up screen perhaps, have a crash-test dummy type feature where you can quickly load a jersey (or other) mod to see how it displays with full screen view. Rather than currently where you need to load and edit an existing game every time you make a minor change, and can only partially view the result.

Be able to search players by role. If I want to find a power forward I should be able to select that option and it will give me players who's role as a power forward is rated 16 or above maybe? Just make finding the type of player you want to sign/trade for easier.

Please let the player choose the market size and fan loyalty/interest like how it is in OOTP. For the former, it should be 1-10, with 10 being huge. As for the latter, it's 1-100, and changes depending on how the team does. Win a lot of games, have playoff success and it goes up. Lose a lot and have playoff droughts and it goes down.

Nothing is more annoying in a long-term save than having all of the teams become disloyal and it never goes back up. Hopefully FHM 9 fixes this.

I know it's not really a solution, but you can edit loyalty in commissioner mode.

But if you play challenge, for the challenge, you can't do that. What exists now is unrealistic for quite a few players. Some are more mercenary than others, that could be a player trait. Do we have those yet? Maybe it would be hidden from the GM until negotiations started.

Also, even with 20 in negotiating and winning multiple cups, I cannot sign free agents to deals anywhere close to the AI. Like Miller in Vancouver wanted 9 per and a no-move clause, I traded him to Carolina and they signed him to an extension for 5.5 per and that's it. Now I just don't bother putting points into Negotiating, I don't think it does anything or has a tiny, tiny bonus.
