Defensive positioning
Just curious as to how many who are manually playing games move the defense (shift left, outfield very deep, etc.) and, if so, notice any beneficial results.
I have the AI set the initial defense, but I'll often see a left-handed power hitter who is labeled an extreme pull hitter (for whom I'll set the infield as Hard Shift Right), only to see the outfield preset by the AI (apparently) the other way. Is that because the spray charts indicate most of his long balls go "oppo"? Sometimes I'll go an entire game without moving the infield or outfield and have success, only to do what seems indicated but get burned. One of those "That's baseball" moments? Any observations or suggestions will be appreciated. |

I let the AI do defense. But on offense, I believe my pull hitters tend to underperform against teams that shift, but tend to do better against teams that don't.

I don't let the ai set the initial defense.
What seems to work pretty well for me is: Infield - I use the weak shifts against ground ball pull hitters and the hard shifts against ground ball extreme pullers. Third base in against lefties with 60+ bunt for hit ratings with no outs and with one out in the later innings of a tie game until two strikes. If I have a poor fielding pitcher I'll do it against a righty in a late tie game with none out. Corners in against pitchers with runners on first, second or both with none or one out. Outfield - Shift left/right against fly ball pullers. Never use the in/deep shift because it drives me nuts to have it in and have a dude with a strand of spaghetti for a bat knock it off the wall ![]() I think over the long term it makes a definite difference and when I get burned on a shift I just chalk it up to the opponents hitter getting the job done and think, "I wish my guys would do that" ![]() Last edited by Will_L; 12-17-2020 at 03:01 AM. |

I almost never shift the outfield.
But I will make occasional changes to the infield alignment. I almost always go into double-play mode with a runner on first and less than two outs. I also rarely play infield in, maybe corners in, as when you do the ball almost always gets hit over the 2B's or SS's head. I've manually played 1,000s of games start to finish, and almost never -- maybe a couple times a season (162 games) -- see anyone but the pitcher attempt to bunt. So I rarely defend the bunt, infield in, unless the pitcher is at the plate. |

Thanks for the good thoughts. Ever wonder, as I do, what's the difference between Infield Deep and DP Depth? And I remember Maury Wills in his book stating that Guarding the Lines is idiotic in most cases and that if you're going to do it, why just in the late innings?
