1989 Phillies - Hopefully Better than Reality

I am going to try to write another Dynasty report after my last one fizzled out. I am taking over the Phillies on September 1st of 1989 and will hopefully do better than they did in real life over the next 10-15 years.

BNN reports today that general manager Lee Thomas of the Philadelphia Phillies has been relieved of his duties. Thomas, 53, was hired in June of last year an lasted a little over a year. Before that, he had spent the last 8 seasons as the Director of Player Development for the St. Louis Cardinals, a team which won 3 NL pennants and a World Series during that span. This is the second GM to last less than a year in Philadelphia, but after going 50-82, a change was needed.

The local media welcomed Frank Gatti as the new manger and GM of the Philadelphia Phillies today. The New Jersey native was questioned for several minutes by reporters about his goals and hopes for the club. He spoke about relying on his background in budgeting, statistics and labor negotiations. He spent the 8 years in the Phillies organization, with the last 2 being the Director of Player Development.

Some local media are praising the signing as a good one, while others feel Gatti is in over his head.

8/31/1989 - 40 Man Roster

The previous regime did a terrible job as they promoted players way too quickly. Here is my current 40 man roster:

C - Darren Daulton, Steve Lake, Al Pardo, Frank Bellino
1B - Ricky Jordan, Keith Miller
2B - Tom Herr, Mickey Morandini
3B - Randy Ready, Joe Redfield, Steve Jeltz
SS - Dickie Thon, Tom Barrett,
LF - John Kruk
CF - Lenny Dykstra, Bob Dernier, Steve Stanicek, Steve Bieser
RF - Von Hayes, Ron Jones, Jeff Jackson, Dwayne Murphy

SP - Ken Howell, Terry Mulholland, Bruce Ruffin, Floyd Youmans, Scott Service, Pat Combs, Mike Maddux, Bob Ayrault
RP - Randy O'Neal, Jeff Parrett, Larry McWilliams, Todd Frohwirth, Don Carman, Steve Parris, Matt Stevens
CL - Roger McDowell
60 Day DL - Dennis Cook,

This team has some offensive talent, but little on the pitching side. The farm system is not highly regarded either. I will spend the month figuring out who to keep and who to get rid off. I do not plan on making many roster moves other than to bring up some September call ups.

We ended August with a double header in San Diego. In Game 1, Bruce Ruffin went against Ed Whitson. The offensive powered us to a 7-4 win. Randy Ready had 2 hits included a HR and 3 RBI. Ricky Jordan and Lenny Dykstra each chipped in 2 hits. Ruffin went 4.2 IP giving 1 ER on 5 htis. Randy O'Neal picked up the win with 3 IP in relief.

Game 2 started off good as we scored 4 in the top of the 1st. Ken Howell gave up 4 in the bottom of the 1st, another in the 2nd and another in the 4th before getting pulled. All together he gave up 6 runs and 5 BB in 3.1 IP picking up his 16th loss. Matt Stevens and Don Carman each gave up 4 ER in relief as the final was 16-4 loss. Lenny Dykstra hit his 5th HR.

9/1/1989 - Roster Moves

With the expanded roster, I called up the following players:
  • Steve Lake, C
  • Tom Barrett, INF
  • Bob Denier, OF
  • Scott Service, P

My minor leagues have limited amounts of pitchers or I would have brought up more. I need to look at FAs.

I signed free agent pitchers Bob McClure and Jerry Reuss to minor contracts and assigned them to AAA Scranton. I promoted Alex Madrid and Todd Frohwirth to Philadephia. Both have shuttled back and forth all season

9/4/1989 - Phillies Phodder

The Padres finished off the sweep winning games 4-3 and 8-1. Bruce Ruffin left with an injury but it looks like it minor. Mike Schmidt hit his 6 HR of the season. I offered Jamie Quirk a minor league contract.

Phillies Phodder: Weekly Report - 9/9/1989
Record: 50-92, 6th 32 GB

Transactions:
  • Purchased contract of C Tom Nieto and promoted him to the majors
  • Signed C Jaime Quirk and 2B Ron Oester to minor league contracts and assigned them to AAA
  • Activated CF Bob Dernier from the 60 Day DL and added him to the 40 man roster
  • Designated RP Rich Buonantony for assignment
  • Offered Minor League Contract to SP Richard Dotson

Notes:
We went 2-5 this week, losing to San Diego, spliting 2 game series with both the Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates anf losing the first 2 games to the Montreal Expos. Ken Howell got one of the wins going 8 strong innings against the Cubs giving up 1 run.

Quirk and Oester were needed to fill out the AAA roster after promoting Nieto. At this point I'm just trying to add some veterans that could possibly play well enough to make the team next year. Buonantony was DFA'd as he never should have been put on the 40 man to begin with. He's a marginal prospect that's at least 3 years away. No one will claim him. Dotson is a 30 year old former All-Star with decent control and movement.

League News:
San Diego trades RF Tony Gwynn to Detroit for RF Rico Brogna and 3B Mike Brumley.

Phillies Phodder - 10/2/1989
Record: 57-105, Last 6th 37 GB
Attendance: 18,771 per game

Notes:
September and October were not kind to the Phillies as we 9-19 to finsih a dreadful 57-105. This was our worst season since 1945 when we went 46-108. Sadly, the .352 winning percentage was only our 18th worst in franchise history.

Phillies Phodder: Owner Review - 10/21/1989

I was a little nervous as I sat down for my end of season review with owner Bill Giles. Even though I only took over on September 1, I was not happy with how the season ended. I knew he wasn't happy either.

"Frank, this was one of the worst seasons we suffered through in years. The play on the field was terrible and because of it we had our lowest attendance this decade. What will you do to turn this around?"
"I know it was bad and this is not going to be an easy fix to turn this around. We have some talent at the major league level, but our farm system is one of the worst. I want to rebuild from the ground up. Most of the coaching staffs in the minor had their contracts expire and I am not planning on renewing. I want to hire personnel that will focus on developing the players in the lower levels. We will want to target guys that have patience at the plate, that play good defense and make contact. We will also try to acquire some power guys as they are always needed. For pitching our biggest focus is control. we do not want guys that the going to walk people. At the upper level of the minors will be our few top prospects (Mickey Morandini, Charlie Hayes and Andy Ashby) and we will fill out the rosters with veterans leaders. At the major league level, we will look for mid level free agents that we sign to 1 year deals with club options for the second. We will also look to trade some of our expensive guys for prospects. We'll have the first pick in the draft this December and we need to hit on our picks there. That's the high level plan."

"What will you do first?"

"Analyze the 40 man roster and jettison guys that fit in our plans. If no one claims them, we'll send them to AAA or AA. We will scour the waiver wire and claim cast offs from other teams and use the Rule 5 draft to try and improve."

"While September didn't go how you wanted it to, what do you think went well?" Giles asked.

"Some of our pitchers pitched well. Bruce Ruffin had a 1.63 ERA in 27.2 IP. Mike Maddux had 2.14 ERA in 21 IP and Roger McDowell had 4 saves and didn't give up a run in 14.1 IP. Once Dykstra got back from the DL, he hit .359 with 3 HR, 11 RBIs and a SB. Role players, Joe Redfield (.308 with HR, 5 RBI) and Eric Bullock (.455 Ave) helped us win a few games. Hopefully, we will be a little healthier next year."

"OK, Frank. When we hired you years ago, the idea was that as a non-baseball lifer, you could provide out of the box thinking. With your background in statistics and budgeting, I want to see you to start looking at things in different ways. You have 3 years to show me improvements. I want the on field team to not suck, which will increase the attendance. we need to be in 28,000 a game range. This is also a business, so I need you to increase our profit margins to over 1.4 million. Most importantly, I want you to improve your drafting.

"Yes, sir"

MLB Expansion

MLB Commissioner A. Bart Giamatti announced today that the National League will expand from 12 to 14 teams beginning in the 1993 season. There has been extensive negotiations between the MLBPA and MLB over the past year and it was finally agreed to expand with the new CBA.

Ten cities were considered serious candidates for the two spots: Buffalo, New York; Charlotte, North Carolina; Denver, Colorado; Miami, Florida; Nashville, Tennessee; Vancouver, British Columbia; Phoenix, Arizona; Sacramento, California; Portlan, Oregon; and Washington, D.C. When asked if there would be any realignment of the current teams, Giamatti answered "We have not gotten that far in the process. By the next offseason we will choose which of the 10 bids we are accepting."

10/22/1989 - GM Memo

FROM: GM
TO: Front Office and Player Personnel Staff

The following players have been waived and designated for assignment:
  • C Tom Nieto, Steve Lake
  • OF Jim Olander, Bob Dernier
  • SP Steve Ontiveros, Chuck Hurst
  • RP Tom Edens, Todd Goergen, Alex Madrid

These players are no longer on the 40 Man roster and will be reassigned to AAA if they clear waivers.

We have place a successful waiver claim on C Erik Pappas and added him to the 40 man roster. John Kruk and Don Carmen have been activated from the 60 Day DL and added to the 40 man roster.

After opening some spots on the 40 man roster, I scoured the waiver wire to see if there was anyone out there I was interested in. I place claims on the following players:
  • RP John Johnstone, Jose Melendez
  • OF Brett Magnusson
  • 2B Chip Hale
  • SS Mike Mordecai

While none of these guys will whip the fan base into a frenzy, they should be upgrades over the current fringe roster/AAA guys.

I also executed my first trade: I trade C Jaime Quirk, who we picked up in September and C\OF Chris Calvert who hit .188 with 12 as a 27 year old in Single A for AAA OF Chris Gwynn and AA SP Dennis Springer. Gwynn split the season between AA and AAA he hit .288 with 5 HR 26 RBI in AA and .257 with 5 HR and 36 RBIs in AAA. Springer, went 9-11 with 4.60 ERA in 25 starts and walked 79 in 186 IP at AA.

After months of searching I've offered the Assistant GM job to former Phillies pitcher Chris Short. I am awaiting his response.

The Baseball News Network is reporting that the Phillies and Pirates have consummated a trade. Pittsburgh will receive 28-year-old RHP Jeff Parrett, 21-year-old minor league RF Kenneth Bean and 20-year-old minor league 3B Robert Mendonca in a swap for 27-year-old minor league 1B Orestes Destrade, 23-year-old minor league LHP Randy Tomlin and 21-year-old minor league RHP Paul Wagner. A league analyst called the trade a "fairly even transaction."

Phillies Phodder: Offseason Report - 11/9/1989

Transactions:
  • Chris Short agrees to 3 year contract at $25K a year to be Assist GM

Major League Free Agents:
The following major league players are pending free agents:
  • 3B Mike Schmidt - No contract offered. This is tough but at 40, he put up the worse number of his career. He hit .212 with 7 HR, 27 RBIs. HIs OPS was a career low at .632. I don't want to see him in another uniform but I'm not sure I can bring him back at the $340K he wants.
  • 2B Steve Jeltz - No Contract offered. An easy call as in 431 ABs in AAA, he slashed .209/.298/.274 with 0 HR, 42 RBI. He did play above average defense at 2B, 3B and SS, but he is out another 2 months with torn ankle ligaments.
  • SP Larry McWilliams - No Contract offered. Another easy call as he only pitched 24 IP. He went 1-1 with a save and he walked 19 and only struck out 11. His 5.01 ERA was better than his FIP. He is also out another 4 months with an elbow injury.

Minor League FAs:
The following minor league players are pending minor league free agents that I offered minor league extensions to:
  • RP Tom Edens - He declined
  • 1B Orestes Destrade - Waiting on response
  • 1B Steve Stanicek - He declined
  • CF Jim Olander - He declined

Notes:
I am working on some trades of my arbitration eligible players, but nothing concrete yet. I am non tendering C Steve Lake and C Tom Nieto
