Rebuilding the Reds

Since firing manager Dusty Baker after a Wild Card loss in 2013, the Cincinnati Reds have not yet returned to the playoffs. Since then, the club hasn't won more than 76 games, and has never seriously contended for a playoff spot. In this dynasty, I will take over as General Manager of the Reds, and while I will be setting the lineups and pitching staff, I will let the AI handle in-game management.

Settings:
Batter/Pitcher Aging Speed: .750
Batter/Pitcher Development Speed: 1.000
Talent Change Randomness: 125
AI Evaluation Settings: 40/30/20/10
Scouting Accuracy: Low
Trade Settings: Hard/Neutral (Looking for input on this setting, in the past I've done favor prospects but I'd love to hear more opinions on this)

I'm letting the Assistant GM control minor league promotions/demotions, minor league lineups, setting the scouting budget, and hire/fire minor league personnel.

Rebuilding the Reds should be quite a challenge, as the team has finished in the basement of the NL Central 3 seasons in a row. However, there are some reasons for optimism: 1B Joey Votto finished 2nd place in the MVP voting last year, leading the Reds offense to a league average finish in runs scored. Scoring runs wasn't a huge problem for the Reds last year, but preventing them was a different story. Only the Detroit Tigers allowed more runs than Cincinnati in 2017, so if the Reds want to contend in the near future, the pitching staff must be upgraded.

While the Reds aren't as strapped for cash as Derek Jeter's Miami Marlins, they certainly do not have a huge budget. At $101 million, the Reds have the 21st largest payroll in baseball, but most of that is taken by 3 players who were on the team during Cincinnati's last playoff run. 1B Joey Votto, Homer Bailey, and Devin Mesoraco will combine to make $59 million in 2018, and while Votto is still a star at 34 years old, the same can not be said about Bailey and Mesoraco. Both players have dealt with significant injuries in the past, and at this point it will be difficult to trade them without eating most of their salaries. Fortunately, both contracts will be off the books after 2019 (assuming Bailey's team option is not executed), which will result in much more financial flexibility.

Another bright spot within the organization is the farm system, which ranks 8th in Major League Baseball. 3B Nick Senzel was the 2nd overall draft pick in 2016, and is currently ranked as the 4th prospect in all of baseball. In 2017, the Reds selected SP Hunter Greene with the 2nd pick of the first round, who has the potential to be used as a two-way player in the future. The other prospect to watch is 23 year old Tyler Mahle, who will begin the year in the MLB rotation. Mahle tossed a perfect game for AA Pensacola last year, and recorded a 2.70 ERA in 4 starts with the Reds last season.

Preseason Predictions:

2018 Cincinnati Reds Roster:
(Age, Bats/Throws, 2017 Stats)

Starting Pitchers:
Luis Castillo (25, R, 89.1 IP, 98 K, 3.12 ERA, 1.07 WHIP)
Sal Romano (24, R, 87.0 IP, 73 K, 4.45 ERA, 1.47 WHIP)
Tyler Mahle (23, R, 20.0 IP, 14 K, 2.70 ERA, 1.50 WHIP)
Homer Bailey (31, 91.0 IP, 67 K, 6.43 ERA, 1.69 WHIP)
Yovani Gallardo (32, 130.2 IP, 94 K, 5.72 ERA, 1.52 WHIP with SEA)

Last season, Luis Castillo broke out in his 15 starts, posting a 3.12 ERA and striking out over a batter an inning. However, it is a bit unsettling to have an ace with so little experience under his belt. Romano and Mahle both have high upsides, but also lack experience. The back-end of the rotation features two over-the-hill veterans, as both Homer Bailey and Yovani Gallardo struggled in 2017. Bailey was well above average before his injury in 2014, but got hit hard last year after missing nearly 2 full seasons. Waiting in the minors are lefties Cody Reed and Amir Garrett, but both had trouble while pitching with the big league club last year.

Relief Pitchers:
Jimmy Herget (24, R, 32.1 IP, 28 K, 3.06 ERA 1.21 WHIP with AAA Louisville)
Austin Brice (25, R, 32.2 IP, 26 K, 4.96 ERA, 1.22 WHIP)
Kevin Quackenbush (29, R, 26.1 IP, 23 K, 7.86 ERA, 1.82 WHIP with SD)
Ben Rowen (29, R, 63.1 IP, 52 K, 4.41 ERA, 1.47 WHIP with AAA Las Vegas (NYM))
Wandy Peralta (26, L, 64.2 IP, 57 K, 3.76 ERA, 1.19 WHIP)
Jared Hughes (32, R, 59.2 IP, 48 K, 3.02 ERA, 1.22 WHIP with MIL)
Raisel Iglesias (28, R, 76.0 IP, 92 K, 2.49 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 28 SV)

The bullpen has more question marks than any other aspect of this team, as only 3 relievers tossed more than 40 MLB innings in 2017. Ben Rowen and Kevin Quackenbush were added over the offseason, and while each has had flashes of success in the past, both had rough 2017 campaigns. The back end of the bullpen looks to be serviceable, as Raisel Iglesias became an above-average closer since leaving the starting rotation early in 2016. Jared Hughes had another strong season in Milwaukee, and southpaw Wandy Peralta pitched well in his first full major league season. Help is also on the way for our bullpen, as Michael Lorenzen (4.45 ERA in 2017) should return from a shoulder injury in a few weeks. Veteran David Hernandez was also picked up over the offseason, and while hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2015, he has the potential to be a solid reliever once he returns from injury in a few weeks.

Catchers:
Tucker Barnhart (27, S, .270/.347/.403, 7 HR, 1.9 WAR)
Devin Mesoraco (29, R, .213/.321/.390, 6 HR, 0.5 WAR)

Tucker Barnhart has taken over as the Reds starting catcher over the last two years with Mesoraco missing significant time with injuries, and the 27 year old switch hitter has played well behind the plate. Barnhart probably won't become an All Star at this point in his career, but he is definitely good enough to be a major league starter. A much bigger question mark is Devin Mesoraco, who has done very little since his big year in 2014. Perhaps Mesoraco can still be a good hitter, but after missing so much time with injuries, it seems unlikely that he can handle the workload of being a starting catcher.

Infielders:
1B Joey Votto (34, L, .320/.454/.578, 36 HR, 6.8 WAR)
2B Scooter Gennett (27, L, .295/.342/.531, 27 HR, 3.5 WAR)
2B/SS Dilson Herrera (24, L, .264/.312/.397, 7 HR, with AAA Louisville)
IF Cliff Pennington (33, S, .253/.306/.330, 3 HR, 0.0 WAR with LAA)
SS Jose Peraza (23, R, .259/.297/.324, 5 HR, -0.1 WAR)
3B Eugenio Suarez (26, R, .260/.367/.461, 26 HR, 3.9 WAR)

Joey Votto's huge 2017 season was no surprise, as he has been regarded as one of the best hitters in baseball for many years by now. A much bigger surprise was the breakout performances turned in by Scooter Gennett and Eugenio Suarez, who combined to hit over 50 home runs. One of the biggest holes in the lineup may be at shortstop, as Jose Peraza did not build off his cup of coffee in 2016. Peraza only managed to draw 20 walks in 518 plate appearances, and while he was able to steal 23 bases, good baserunning is wasted if you can't get on base.

Outfielders:
Adam Duvall (29, R, .249/.301/.480, 31 HR, 1.6 WAR)
Billy Hamilton (27, S, .247/.299/.335, 4 HR, 0.5 WAR)
Scott Schebler (27, L, .233/.307/.484, 30 HR, 1.4 WAR)
Jesse Winker (24, L, .298/.375/.529, 7 HR, 1.0 WAR)
Phil Ervin (25, R, .259/.317/.448, 3 HR, 0.3 WAR)

Billy Hamilton may be the one of the fastest men in baseball, but his disappointing offensive performance in 2017 makes it hard to leave him in the lineup on a daily basis. While Hamilton is still a great defender in center field, his bat has never quite developed. Adam Duvall and Scott Schebler each bring great power from the corner outfield spots, but even more exciting may be Jesse Winker, who hit the ball very well in limited time last year. If Winker continues to produce, a move may need to be made to give him more playing time. For now, the trio of Duvall, Schebler, and Winker will each get chances until it is more clear on who should be in the starting lineup.

Disabled List:
SP Rookie Davis (24, R, 24.0 IP, 20 K, 8.63 ERA)- Out 8 weeks

C Tucker Barnhart 2-4, RBI, BB
Tyler Mahle gave us by far our best start of the season, pitching 7.1 shutout innings and striking out 4. We didn't have a single extra base hit, but 14 singles and 4 walks isn't too bad.

Top Performances:
Blue Jays 3B Josh Donaldson 2-4, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 3 R, 2 BB in 16-6 win vs Rangers
Braves CF Ender Inciarte 5-6, 2 RBI, 3 R in 10-2 win vs Rockies

Three home runs by the offense and a quality start by Gallardo led to an easy win in the series opener at Philadelphia.

Around the League:
Nationals reliever Ryan Madson is out 5 weeks with strained biceps. Madson has a 2.45 ERA in 7 appearances this year.

Top Performances:
Mariners RF Nelson Cruz 3-4, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 3 R in 5-4 win vs Royals

Quiet day at the plate but at least Luis Castillo finally had a good start, striking out 5 batters in 6 innings and allowing just 2 runs (1 earned).

Transactions:
Kevin Shackleford, Michael Lorenzen, David Hernandez, and Brandon Finnegan have all been sent to AAA Louisville for rehab assignments. Sal Romano has also been activated from the DL, and he will make his second start of the season tomorrow. Robert Stephenson has been optioned to AAA, but is likely next in line to return to the rotation in the event of another injury.

Top Performances:
Dodgers CF Chris Taylor 4-5, 2B, 3B, HR, 5 RBI, 3 R, hit for the cycle in 9-1 win vs Athletics
Yankees CF Aaron Hicks 3-3, 2B, HR, RBI, 3 R, 2 BB in 9-5 win vs Red Sox

C Tucker Barnhart 1-3, R
HR: CIN: Jose Peraza (1) PHI: Odubel Herrera (2)
Jose Peraza's two run shot in the 5th provided all of Cincinnati's offense, and we survived a solo homer from Odubel Herrera in the 9th. Sal Romano was great after missing his last start, pitching 6 strong innings.

Top Performances:
Padres CF Franchy Cordero 3-5, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 2 R in 8-4 win vs Rockies

Despite just having 8 hits and no home runs, the Reds cashed in on their opportunities with runners in scoring position. Tyler Mahle was inneffective in a short 3 inning outing, but the bullpen picked him up by firing 6 scoreless innings.

Around the League:
Twins 1B Joe Mauer records hit #2,000 for his career against the White Sox. Mauer is a lifetime .308 hitter, and is off to a fast start in 2018, hitting .359 to start the season.
Cubs reliever Brandon Morrow is out 4 months with a partially torn labrum. Morrow was brought in to be Chicago's closer, but now the Cubs will have to look elsewhere as he will miss nearly the entire season.
Red Sox starter David Price will undergo Tommy John Surgery, and will miss the rest of the 2018 season. He finishes the year with a 1.93 ERA in 3 starts.

HR: STL: Yadier Molina (1), Jose Martinez (2), Dexter Fowler (2), Kolten Wong (2) CIN: Eugenio Suarez (2), Devin Mesoraco (1)
Homer Bailey got lit up for the third start in a row, and with other pitchers in the organization returning from injury in the near future, it will be tough to keep him in the rotation.

Luis Castillo allowed just 1 hit over 6 innings, but St. Louis broke the scoring open on a home run by SS Paul DeJong in the 7th. Peraza answered with a solo shot in the bottom half, but it wasn't enough as the Reds could only cash in on 1 run on 9 hits.

We just had three hits in the entire game, and although Votto's home run in the 8th gave us life, it wasn't enough. Michael Lorenzen looked good in his first appearance, striking out 2 in a clean 9th inning.

Injury Report:
SP Brandon Finnegan injured his shoulder during a rehab start, and will head back to the disabled list for the next 2-4 weeks.

A pair of home runs lifted the Brewers to a 5-1 lead in the first inning, but afterward Tyler Mahle settled down and the Reds managed to come back with a 4-run 6th. Schebler and Duvall each drove in a pair with home runs of their own, and the bullpen pitched 5 hitless frames to close out the game.

A 3 run homer in the first by Adam Duvall was all the Reds needed, as Yovani Gallardo was sharp in his second win of the season.

IF Cliff Pennington has been waived and designated for assignment. So far we have been getting very little out of the middle infield, so Alex Blandino has been called up from AAA. Blandino, a former first round pick, was hitting .306/.394/.581 in 16 minor league games this year. He will get immediate playing time at first, and if he plays well he could stick in the starting lineup for the foreseeable future.

Alex Blandino's first career hit was a huge one, as it was a grand slam that broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the 7th. The Reds added 6 more runs in the 8th to cruise to victory, as Scooter Gennett also hit a grand slam in the game.

Around the League:

Billy Hamilton likely had his best game ever in a Reds uniform, as the speedy center fielder hit 2 home runs in addition to his 3 stolen bases. Alex Blandino homered for the second consecutive day, and Homer Bailey looked like the ace he hoped he would become, coming 2 outs away from his first complete game of the year.

Luis Castillo is still searching for his first win, but the young rightly was locked in, striking out 8 batters over 6 innings. Joey Votto tied the game in the 6th with a base hit, and Scott Schebler broke it with a solo home run.

Around the League:
Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel records career save #300 against the Blue Jays. Kimbrel has 9 saves on the season, posting a 2.25 ERA. For his career, Kimbrel has 780 strikeouts and a 1.81 ERA.
Orioles CF Adam Jones is out for the year with a broken kneecap. Jones was hitting .313 with 6 home runs on the season, so this is a big blow to Baltimore's offense. This may conclude Jones' career in an Oriole uniform, as he is set to be a free agent this offseason.
Nationals lefty Gio Gonzalez has signed a 5 year extension worth $90 million to keep him in Washington. Gonzalez has a 5.34 ERA so far in 2018, but a year ago he was great, posting a 2.96 ERA and winning 15 games.

Our first experience of interleague play this season did not go well, as the Twins scored 4 in the 7th to cruise to victory.

Injury Report:
We got two pieces of bad news after the game, as a pair of our relievers will hit the DL. Lefty Wandy Peralta will just miss 1-2 weeks with a herniated disc. Fortunately, his injury is not more severe, as he has pitched to a 2.08 ERA so far. The bigger blow is Ben Rowen's injury, as the submarine pitcher will miss at least 4 months with an elbow injury. Righty David Hernandez and lefty Dean Kiekheffer have been called up to the majors as a result.

Top Performances:
Angels CF Mike Trout 3-5, 2B, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 3 R in 5-2 win vs Yankees

Twins closer Trevor Hildenberger hadn't allowed a run all season, but Adam Duvall ended that streak with an RBI double in the top of the tenth. After allowing a run in the 8th, Austin Brice pitched two scoreless innings to secure the win.

Around the League:

A big 4 run top of the first by Milwaukee was too much to overcome, as the Reds were held scoreless after the 2nd inning.

Injury Report:
LHP Dean Kiekheffer has been diagnosed with forearm tightness, and will be shut down for a week. He will be placed on the DL, and Amir Garrett has been promoted, where he will work out of the bullpen until Wandy Peralta is ready to return.

The good:
  • Joey Votto has been excellent this year, leading the team in almost every offensive category. In order for us to score runs he will need to be a force in the middle of the lineup.
  • Billy Hamilton has been a pleasant surprise at the top of the lineup. While his on base percentage is still underwhelming at .302, 16 steals this early in the season is huge. He still isn't quite the ideal lead off hitter, but at this point he is the best we've got.
  • Tucker Barnhart had a very solid month, finishing right behind Votto in the triple slash categories.

The bad:
  • After getting off to a hot start in the first week of the season, Jesse Winker has really cooled off at the plate. He was never expected to be a big time power hitter, but a .304 slugging percentage isn't cutting it.
  • Fortunately for Winker, his competition Scott Schebler also had a very quiet month. Schebler started to hit this past week, but he still has a lot of work to do to stay in the lineup.
  • Scooter Gennett has been very disappointing after a huge 2017. Right now, it's looking like last year might have been a fluke, because he has looked lost at the plate.

The good:
  • Although he is still looking for a win, Luis Castillo has been very solid at the top of the rotation. His first two starts were poor, but he has since rebounded very well.
  • How about Jimmy Herget? The rookie wasn't expected to do much in middle relief, but he has probably been our best bullpen piece so far.
  • Overall, our bullpen ERA is 6th in the National League; A tremendous improvement from 2017.

The bad:
  • Even though his last two starts have been passable, Homer Bailey doesn't look like a major league pitcher at this point in his career. For now, his job is safe, but if some of our prospects do well enough to earn a spot, Bailey could be headed a relief role.
  • Tyler Mahle has been inconsistent in what looks to be his first full MLB season, as the young righty has already allowed 9 home runs on the year.
  • 14th place in the NL in Starters ERA. Ouch.

We outhit the Brewers 10-4, but couldn't cash in on opportunities with runners on base. Luis Castillo left after 4 innings with a shoulder injury, but he should be ready to make his next start.

Around The League:
The Dodgers have signed RP Trevor Rosenthal to a 1 year deal. Rosenthal will not be able to pitch this year as he recovers from elbow surgery, but perhaps Los Angeles thinks they will be able to lock him up to an extension this offseason.

Jose Peraza helped us avoid the sweep with a clutch base hit to drive in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 8th.

Around the League:
Yankees SP CC Sabathia is out for the year with a partially torn UCL. Sabathia finishes the year with a 6.23 ERA. At 37 years old, Sabathia may decide to hang up the spikes, as he will be a free agent at the end of the season.
Rangers SP Tim Lincecum is out for the year with a torn UCL. Lincecum tried to make a comeback to the majors, but he suffered his season ending injury after just 1 start with Texas.

Tyler Mahle went the distance for our first complete game of the year, and the offense provided more than enough support. Amazingly, Joey Votto was the only starter to not record a base hit.

Homer Bailey continued his hot streak, and despite no home runs, we managed to score 6 runs on 10 hits.

Injury Report:
Awful news came from the medical staff today, as Tyler Mahle was diagnosed with a stretched elbow ligament. He will be out for the rest of the season after posting a 4-1 record, striking out 43 batters and recording a 3.61 ERA. At this point, all we can hope for is that he will return for Opening Day 2019.

Joe Maddon's managerial strategy did not work out well in the series opener, as after he ran out of pitchers in the 11th, Scott Schebler teed off on the first offering by backup catcher Chris Gimenez.

Injury Report:
SS Jose Peraza was removed from the game with back soreness, and he is headed to the disabled list. So much for DFA'ing Dilson Herrera, as the rookie has been called back up to get another chance. With Peraza out, Alex Blandino will look to get more playing time at short.

The good:
  • Joey Votto has continued his amazing season, as he leads the major leagues in on base percentage. At 34 years old, he shows no signs of slowing down.
  • Jesse Winker had a solid month, bringing his batting average up to .258. It would be nice if he could hit for more power, as 35 of his 41 hits are singles.
  • Scooter Gennett has started to look like his 2017 self, as he put up a .785 OPS in May.

The bad:
  • Billy Hamilton has really struggled this month, and was recently moved to the bottom of the order. Hamilton's defense and speed are great assets, but his bat is still inconsistent.
  • Adam Duvall got on base at a .220 clip for the Month. Lucky for him, Schebler isn't doing much better. Right now the biggest weakness of our offense has definitely been the outfield.
  • Our team average of .233 ranks last in the National League.

The good:
  • Luis Castillo has met his high expectations entering this season, as he leads our pitching staff with a 1.3 WAR. I'd like to see him go deeper into games, but keeping his arm fresh for a potential postseason run is important.
  • Homer Bailey pitched to a 3.26 ERA in May. Early in the season, Bailey looked like he could lose his rotation spot, but he has since earned our trust to be a decent back-of-the-rotation pitcher.
  • Austin Brice was our best reliever this month, allowing just 1 run in 13.2 innings, striking out 13.

The bad:
  • Tyler Mahle's rookie season ended prematurely, as the righty will miss the rest of the season with a stretched elbow ligament. Mahle's last few starts were great, so replacing him will be no small task.
  • Speaking of injuries, Anthony DeSclafani has been recovering from a strained oblique slower than expected. Hopefully he will be able to make rehab starts by the end of June, but as he hasn't pitched in almost two years, he is a huge question mark.
  • Jared Hughes entered the year as our top right-handed setup man, but he has struggled all year to a 5.64 ERA.

Overall, this season has been amazing considering preseason expectations. I'm not sure we will be able to acquire much help at the trade deadline given our financial constraints, but if we're still in position to make the postseason a month from now, we might have to make upgrades. Specifically, we may be looking to acquire a corner outfielder to replace the slumping Adam Duvall.

June 1st:
Reds 1 @ Padres 5
WP: Tyson Ross (4-2, 4.11)
LP: Homer Bailey (3-6, 5.48)

SS Alex Blandino 1-3, BB
CF Billy Hamilton 1-3
HR: CIN: Joey Votto (13) SD: Cory Spangenberg (4), Wil Myers (12)
Joey Votto was the only offensive player that stood out, as we had only 5 hits in pitcher-friendly Petco Park.

The Rays have traded SP Nathan Eovaldi (2.5*) to the Angels for LF Jabari Blash (2.5*). Blash is hitting .226 with 3 homers on the year, while Eovaldi is trying to return from an injury, as he hasn't pitched since 2016.

Only 4 hits tonight, but Brandon Finnegan pitched a gem so it was enough to pick up the win.

Around the League:
Mariners SP Felix Hernandez is done for the year with a torn UCL. The former Cy Young winner has struggled to a 5.08 ERA after missing significant time last year with injuries as well.

Top Performances:
White Sox 2B Yoan Moncada 2-4, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 2 R, BB in 12-8 win vs Brewers

Back-to-back great outings by our 4 and 5 starters helped us win the series, and rookies Herrera and Blandino each had big days at the plate.
