Del & Johnny
On June 24, 1949 this pair of 19-year-old, Boston Braves, catcher, Del Crandall and pitcher Johnny Antonelli became two of the youngest major league batterymates ever, although Antonelli took the loss.
Today, of the 43 surviving players who played in the 1940s, Crandall and Antonelli are the two youngest ones. Crandall turned 88 recently, on March 5 and Antonelli's 88th birthday is less than one month away on April 12. |

Crandall & Antonelli: 19 year-old batterymates
Although the photo was signed June 30, 1949, the first time these two
19-year-olds worked to together in the majors leagues was six days earlier on June 24, 1949. That's catcher, Del Crandall (Left) with lefthanded pitcher, Johnny Antonelli on the right. |

Ed Charles (1933 - 2018)
"The Glider", Ed Charles, has died at the age of 84. Ed was famously inspired, as a youngster, by the spring debut of Jackie Robinson with the Dodgers, who happened to train in the town where Ed lived. He broke in with the Kansas City Athletics in 1962 and went on to play third base for the Miracle Mets in 1969. Of all the hundreds of third basemen the Mets ever trotted out there, Ed was always my favorite (sorry David). I'm a little too broken up over this to do a bio, but SABR has a nice one. The one thing that springs to mind is that Gil Hodges did not really want Ed as his third baseman in 1969, feeling he was too old and should retire. Gil thought of Wayne Garrett as just a bench piece. So he tried to shoehorn Amos Otis into a third baseman in '69 and traded Otis to KC for Joe Foy the following year (and we all know how that worked out). Loved Gil, but the man was not infallible. Anyway, Ed and Wayne did OK in '69. So there's that. Rest in peace, Ed. Love ya. Miss ya.

Dick Lemay former player for the Giants and Cubs passed away
"was recalled from the minor leagues during the 1961 season, appearing in 27 games for the Giants that season, starting five. He dropped six of nine decisions and recorded an earned run average of 3.56 and one complete game in 83⅓ innings pitched. He had nine-game trials with the 1962 Giants and the 1963 Chicago Cubs, and was winless in two decisions. All told he won three games, lost eight and had a career ERA of 4.17 in 45 Major League games. In 108 innings pitched, he surrendered 100 hits and 49 bases on balls. He struck out 69, and was credited with four saves.[1] In his lone MLB complete game, on June 24, 1961, at Busch Stadium, he defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 6–1, allowing six hits; future Baseball Hall of Famer Bob Gibson took the loss."

Jesus Martinez (1974 - 2018)
Jesus Martinez, the brother of both Pedro and Ramon Martinez and himself a pitcher, passed away on Tuesday (March 27, 2018) after suffering a heart attack. The youngest of the three pitching brothers, Jesus was just 44.
Like his brothers, Jesus was signed by the Dodgers. Unlike his brothers, Jesus was a southpaw. He made his pro debut in 1992 and pitched in the minor leagues for 10 seasons for the Dodgers, Reds, Red Sox, Indians and Mets. He was also in spring camp with the Marlins in 1998. His career minor league record was 47-64 with an ERA of 5.00 and with 641 strikeouts in 880 innings. Jesus was a certified member of the Bill Sharman Society, having been called up to the Dodgers in September of 1996. But, though he warmed up in the bullpen a few times, he found his major league cup of coffee empty as he never appeared in a major league game. Edit: Just found this from Pedro Martinez' Hall of Fame induction speech which adds a little context to Jesus' major league career. Quote:
