Turning to Stats Only Within a Save Game

Hi all,

After winning four World Series in about 25 or so seasons in a fictional MLB league, I am finding success too easy to come by. Therefore, I would like to switch to the much discussed and hyped "Stats Only" style of play. The one caveat is that I am not interested in playing with feeder leagues--I prefer the randomly generated high school and college numbers that come with the game right out of the box.

Could someone please tell me what settings I should choose to create a stats only game with this in mind? Thank you!

The only thing you need to do is to disable ratings showing up. That would be under Game Settings->Global->Player Rating Scales.

Se Below:

Set scouting accuracy to Very Low for the written reports, and the scales to "None Displayed".

Then go to AI settings and change the weights. While some like the AI to use stats only, I feel the AI can't "think" on the stats as well as a person, especially when it comes to building a defense, so I still prefer to keep it at my usual 20-45-25-10, but if you want the AI to not use ratings either, 0-60-30-10 is what I'd use.

In both cases, some people still like to keep Other ratings on as it's stuff anyone with an eye would be able to see in one spring training session, IE how fast they run, how far they throw a ball, or intangibles such as preferred positions.

As to the feeder vs generated, to be perfectly honest the draft is such a crapshoot it's a six of one, half dozen of the other situation IMHO.

What's the best way to do the draft if you have high school/college players as all their stats are generally very high and it would takes ages to look through all scouting reports?

I use 0-67-22-11 for AI ratings. As far as the draft, I do look at the HS/College stats, and with scouting on low for me, sometimes you need to go with your "gut" feeling. I will look at the scouting overview, but like was already mentioned, you can't look through all of them. I do use the "scout recommendation" feature when drafting, but less than 50% of the time, do I choose that player recommended.

I also like to keep track of my drafted players, and int'l players, with a simple spreadsheet that goes out 10-11 years. I just write in each year where they are in the minors. Nothing fancy, but I like to see how many of those players make it to the "show."

Also, for AI trading, I do Hard, Neutral.

These are the ratings I go with. I'm also not a stats only purist. I have 2-8 ratings show for "other ratings". I feel that stats cannot judge speed. You can have a team philosophy where stealing isn't a priority so it is hard to tell who truly is fast on your team unless you have 100% accuracy with scouting, which I don't. I have mine set to low as well. For that reason you get defensive ratings as well. I have never been able to go full stats only because I find pouring through fielding stats to be less exciting than going through pitching and hitting stats. Why I love the customizable options of OOTP.

As for trading I picked something up on a thread that I have begun to experiment with. Depending on the month of the year I change the setting. So from June till the trading deadline it is set higher with favor prospects. In November to January it is set to a middle setting. In Jan-May it is set pretty low. Trying to mimic how real life GM's operate.

Good luck with stats only. It really is a lot of fun.

Thank you all for the input. I have switched to stats only and am already finding it a more enjoyable challenge. It has left me wondering; however, how to gauge international amateurs or those in the international complex who have no stats to their name. With stats only, how can I tell if they are worthy of a minor league contract or promotion?

You cannot. The only thing to do is to put them in rookie ball and see what they do.

Usually, I turn off all the international signings when I play stats only and have all players enter the league through the draft. I change the player origin settings to get players from all over the world in the draft.
