I just did a horrible thing.

I was setting up a 24 team league with all the teams being from the mid-west. All the teams are in either Arkansas, Missouri, Oaklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska, oh, and Iowa.

I picked all the city names first and got them all setup, then I went to that photobucket site to get some good logos from which I would assign team mascots. So, there I was going through the web pages of logos and found a neat one with a cartoonish jet going through the clouds and with the word "Bombers" underneath it. It made me think of the Brooklyn Bombers and decided to use it.

As I was giving each city it's logo of it's mascot, the last logo was that Bombers one and the last team was.....yes....Oaklahoma City. Yep, the "Oaklahoma City Bombers." I didn't even catch this until I was reading off the names of my teams to my brother. As I read the name "Oaklahoma City Bombers" my jaw dropped and me and my brother became dead silent. Even though this was a accident, I suddenly felt ashamed of myself and found myself saying "I'm sorry."

Man, sometimes life can sneak up on you. I don't know why I'm sharing this with you all. It just seemed like the thing to do.

Don't worry KCKID. I'm sure you weren't thinking when you made your decision to name the OK City team the bombers. Someone may have been trying to reach you and make you think, then make the post here. Now it has me thinking of the horrible day, we all need to be humbled some times.

I guess you are right. It's only right that the people there get remembered. I don't think any of us really think about that day too often, which is a shame really.

Was Timothy McVeigh your ace in the hole? I'm sorry, it was just too tempting.

I visited the site last year for the first time. Very moving.
My wife's doctor was in one of the videos.

Is that worse than the Miami Hurricanes or the Chicago Fire?

Point taken. But it bothered the original poster enough that he chose to share it with us. To each his own with tolerance levels on these subject matters. Your personal milieu is just that, personal. Your values reign. I'd like to think, though, that when a forum member does feel badly about it, and shares it publicly, we can attempt to empathize with his threshold of consideration. And you're right. Same vein, but acts of God tend to be a bit more forgiveable than the acts of men.

Oh, I absolutely agree and was not slamming the original poster at all. It was clear that it was a mistake and if he felt bad enough to share, that's cool with me.

And yes, Acts of God are more forgivable, but it does seem insensitive to me to "celebrate" the tragedies... Like you said, to each his own, and I know that's just my hangup.

New Orleans

In a league I was creating, I was thinking about putting a team in New Orleans. Some how it just didn't feel right. I find it interesting to here another story of reality getting in the way of someone's plan for their placement of teams in our little fantasy baseball world.

Here's a little piece of unrelated reality I probably shouldn't share. But in the past, I've always felt a little badly about it, so treat this as catharsis.

FaceGen has solved one small dilemma for me. In years' past, while it fell a bit greater than uncommon in frequency, with the many "real" photopacks I was utilizing, I'll admit there were players whose ratings and/or abilities might have met my criteria, but I just didn't hire 'em because they were butt-ugly or something about their "look" just wasn't going to sit well with me having to see them game after game. Sad, isn't it, to find that a game can be capable of revealing even a simple prejudice for our own definitions of appeal and good merchandising? I don't know whether it's a bit funny, I should be ashamed, or both. (shrug)

Still....a couple of those guys? Ughh.... Sorry, but I still shudder.

Hey, I was never trying to "celebrate" what happened. As I wrote in my post, I felt bad that the team mascot matched up with the city name that it did. I assure you I changed it to another mascot, that's how bad I felt about it. I just posted on here about it cause I was alone at home and had no one else to really talk to. (Sad now that I think about it.)

What happened just made me stop and think for a minute about a dark time in our history, and was surprised it was this game that caused me to reflect on something like that. Far from "celebrating."

endgame, don't feel bad. I have done that too. I'll be trying to trade a guy and when I see his face, I find myself thinking, "No way in hell that smug ass is pitching in my town."

No no no... I must be being spectacularly inarticulate this evening

The "celebrating" comment was referring to the Miami Hurricanes and the Chicago Fire, school/team that deliberately chose a nickname referring to natural disasters.

It wasn't directed at you at all.

Sorry about that
Curt

Are you serious? Big freaking whoop. Oh no, a bomb once went off in Oklahoma City, that must mean everyone must be super sensitive about ever using that word in connection with the city again.

I found out the game came up with the name "Boston Attack" and accidentally showed my league to my friend and then felt so bad about it that I wrote a letter personally apologizing to him. You know, because Boston got attacked by the British in the Revolutionary War? Man, it was bad. Whew, glad that's off my chest

edit: In honor of this thread I have decided to make the Oklahoma City Bombers part of the midwest expansion I will be doing in my league in 10 years. Of course, I will edit the top player on the team to be named Timothy McVeigh. I look forward to following his career.

That's okay, Curt. I got it.

And delta? I was contemplating posting on that theme earlier. Reading yours makes me glad I didn't. On the bright side, at this thread has now filled its sarcasm quota.

I wonder how sensitive you would be if it was your parents that got killed, or maybe one of those kids in the day care center there was yours? I'm not saying I lost anyone there, but I have enough class not to make light of it, cause some people did lose family there. I guess compassion isn't a big thing for you. And I'll be honest, I feel kind of sorry for you.
